Hi MSE
Thanks to your email about checking your tax, I did so and found I've overpaid last year and also currently on the wrong tax code too.
I got a cheque for £665 this morning!
thanks!
Can i ask when and how your informed HMRC? Reason i am asking, i wrote to them about 3 weeks ago and was wondering how long its currently taking to turn around 2010/11 overpayments? We are hoping for about £900!0 -
Used the Tax Code Checker when I received the weekly email and result was a £500 to £600 overpayment for 10/11. Haven't done anything about it but, low and behold I received a letter today from HMRC notifying me of an overpayment for 08/09 of £15 to £16. Not much I know but it's a start.
If I do nothing, how long would it take HMRC to get around to any discrepancies for 09/10 and 10/11, or are they permanently 3 years behind the real world?.0 -
How are we supposed to obtain any tax rebate ?
I have given up counting the number of times that I have been unable to get through on the phone
I have written to HMRC five times now since April - twice by recorded delivery- the last time (almost 4 weeks ago) to the complaints manager - nothing heard back - they do not supply email addresses which leaves me stumped
I have brought my MP in - but according to other posts - he will just pay "lip service" and won't achieve anything...
If I had owed them money - they would be on my back, constantly - can I charge them interest for the delay ?
Plus - they have got my tax code wrong for this TY - by almost £5k pa - which means that, until they get my code correct - I am being over taxed by £1000 pa, or £83 per month - and when you are bringing in £8k pa - that is not affordable !!0 -
Hi All,
Last year, HMRC were demanding about £600 (£295 for 2008/09 and £312 for 2007/08) in unpaid back tax. They were also charging interest. They had previously told me on my statements "You have nothing to pay".
I said I would pay it off as and when I could, they then put me on a payment plan of £50 per month, which as I had not agreed to it, and could not see how I owed this amount, I did not pay anything, and I told them.
They then threatened Distraint (this is when they confiscate your assets and sell them at public auction). I then sought advice from this forum, and the TaxAid charity, as I have a very low income, and the amount of tax demanded was dubious, I was advised to ask HMRC how much they thought I earned to incur the tax liability. (For the years in question, I earned less than the personal allowance)
They agreed to put the Distraint proceedings on hold while they investigated. They wrote to me a couple of times and confirmed that the tax was due, but they did not tell me how much income they thought I had earned.
I wrote a letter headed COMPLAINT in March 2011. They answered that they had "mislaid" (i.e. lost) all of the correspondence, and asked me to send it to them. They then said they had reviewed my complaint and the amounts were correct. I asked how they could have reviewed anything, if they had lost what they were supposed to be reviewing. I sent them a couple of representative letters to help them.
They sent another reply explaining why they considered that I owed the tax. After a few hours online looking at their online overview, I sent them a reply showing my version against their version, on a year by year basis.
I have just had their reply and they tell me that the overall position is that they owe me £180., and are sending a cheque. There's no apology or any acceptance that they made any mistakes. I assume the Distraint proceedings will be permanently shelved, but unsurprisingly there's no mention of that, (Maybe they're hoping I've forgotten). I'm not sure their figure of £180 is correct - I think it should be more, but I can't understand their mathematics.
I don't think HMRC have a calculator between them, so if you have any unwanted ones or even any abacuses, please send them to your friendly helpful tax people ! !0 -
I hope that this is the right place to ask about a couple of emails I have received. They appear to be from HMRC.
The first one said
"We have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of 598.50 GBP
Submit Your Tax Refund Request Via Attachment.
Download to Submit Your Request. " the attachment is called " hmre fund.html "
I didn't open the attachment and was going to call HMRC, not had time yet.
I have just received a second email"Your Tax Refund Notification.
After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity, We have determined that you are eligible to receive a tax refund of 898.50 GBP Please Submit the tax refund request and allow us 2-3 Working days in order to process it. Submit Your Tax Refund Request Via Attachment. Download to Submit Your Request." and the attachment is taxrefund.html
Only the second one had the logo.
Has anyone had the same email? Is it dodgy?0 -
Thanks, I was 99% sure it was. But there's always that 1% ......
