Yes you're right, I got a refund of around £2396 before Christmas. It was then that I realised I'd been overpaying since 2006 so I called them and they have now sent me these notifications.

Oh blimey, I'm thinking they sent me too much now.

Well they haven't sent me further refunds yet. This is what the previous calculations say:

    2008-09 = £1156
    2009-10 = £2396 (combined)

and that's the refund they sent me.

    Thanks

I just got a cheque in this morning's post for £1198! So I expect another cheque will be on it's way. Unbelievable as I had no idea I was overpaying for so long. I'm very grateful for the computer error!:j

It would appear that way - from your figures. But I'm still a bit puzzled they appear to have had two bites at both 08/09 and 09/10.

Do the later figures (the P800s) for those years reveal how - compared to the earlier P800s for the same years - a further > £1k becomes refundable for each year?

I don't know what the figures mean Mike. I'm a tax dummy but it does seem very odd that they should visit those years again. I'm now thinking that the cheque this morning could be an error but surely they would have a record of what they've paid me already?

In respect of the duplicated P800s only. Either the income or the allowances for those 2 years must be different for there to be extra refunds?

If it's the income .... you should be in tune with why that is? If it's the allowances ...... then that's easy enough to spot. In particular if you have a basic idea why 'you've been overpaying for years'?

However - as you say - HMRC should be well aware of the fact they've already issued refunds in respect of those 2 x years.

Ok let me try and tell you the difference as far as I can tell.

    Refund in December 2010 says:
    Tax chargeable = £3360.80
    Less other adjustments = £1156.77
    Tax payable = 2204.03
Repayment due = £2396.57 (because it was pooled together)

    Refund February 2011 says:
    Tax chargeable = £3360.80
    Less other adjustments = £2354.86
    Less total adjustments = £2354.86
    Repayment of tax = £3594.66
Less tax already repaid for the year = £2396.57
    Repayment due = £1198.09

That exactly as it's written on the calculations.

Thank you so much for your help and patience!

    Hi again Sofie.

........ in isolation and without all the support figures .... that little lot doesn't do too much for me either!

However - the extract I've made red (above) leaves you totally in the clear. As it clarifies that - for whatever the reason - the secondary repayment fully takes into account the earlier one you had.

Perhaps it also clarifies the funny notation you mentioned several posts ago ('This includes an overpayment for an earlier year')? As the refund above does include recognition of the multiple year refund you received in Dec.

Trust the other cheque arrives shortly .... and it's all intended for a useful purpose. :)

Thanks Mike, that's very reassuring. And yes, it will go to a very useful purpose!

  • Hi guys, this is very interesting.

I was made redundant in July and have taken on a few temp jobs, is it worth my time looking in to this also?
