. Will that be a one off payment or staggered?
Assuming you get the revised code before your final pay of the year (end March) it will be a 'one off'. If you get it before end Feb pay run then it will be a 11/12th 'one off' with a reduced amount of tax in March. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
The number 672 in your tax code...
The tax code you've input says your tax-free allowance is... £6720 - £6729
Based on ONLY the salary and age you've input,
your personal allowance would be
(read more) £6475
There's a difference of £245 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.
Sorry to be thick but does this mean I might of under paid or overpaid??I am clueless even with the explanations.
Updated:
Have just been scrolling through old posts and see that you get allowance for professional subscriptions etc. Mine come to about 250 a year so guess that is the reason for the difference.0 -

Nice that you - at least - appear to have worked it out for yourself.I think you're in a minority of 'one' so far!
That will be the reason and you should have a P2 (Coding Notice) to substantiate it?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Thank you TheatreTony. Will that be a one off payment or staggered? Thanks, Sofie
It will be a payment in your salary after you receive your new tax code. Depending on the size of the refund, you may still pay tax but not as much as you used to. It you pay £200 a month tax and are due a £150 refund you pay approx £50 in tax (calculations too complicated to work out exact lol)
Or if you pay £200 tax and are due a £250 refund, you would get approx an extra £50 in your pay. The following month you will be paying the correct tax.
Hope that helps..If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!0 -
good god they drive me mad at inland rev!
still no sign of calculation or cheque, rang again to be told that the person last week didnt send an email or whatever they call it to push the refund through, and its NOT 5 days to respond, its 4 WEEKS. how the hell do they get away with it? this has been going on since oct/nov...0 -

If you owed them, I bet they would not allow this much time....
Just keep ringing them about once a week. Hopefully they will get sick of you calling and push it through...If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!0 -
its been my mission to be a pain in their collective backsides since december, they will be getting at least two calls a week til I get my money! one big lesson learned here - check your tax codes!0

At the end of October, I realised that I had been on an emergency tax code for the last 3 years, which means I have basically had no (£10 p.a) tax free allowance in this time.
I phoned the tax office and they paid me last years back in my pay slip. The rest of the tax, they said is being calculated and would be sent to me in a couple of weeks.
I have repeatedly phoned them and every time they say it has been calculated but with another department who they cannot contact.
I am getting very annoyed now. if a company owed me money that it had unfairly taken from me, we would be in court by now.
Is there any way I can take on the governenment? Can I send in the bailifs or something?0 -

If it's taken you 3 years to realise - I'd give them a bit of slack. There are millions underpaid / overpaid and it does appear to being resolved - slowly.
You haven't been on emergency code, otherwise - if with the same employer - your tax would have been OK. Perhaps 'BR', which is rather different? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
After reading about the tax rebate successes, I rang to check why my tax code was lower than the minimum of 647. I was told that this was because of my medical insurance benefit that I had requested. This was news to me, I had never asked for any extra's and discovered that I had been on the wrong tax code since I started my job in 2002. I have received a rebate of £750 from 2005 to april 2010:j. I understand that records do not go back further than that so they are unable to refund money earlier than 2005 (even though I can provide pay slips!!) I also understand that a further refund from april 2010 to present date will be shown in my next pay slip. My wages are low so £750 out of the blue was very nice indeed :A thank you. what a great website!0
