  • Yes, a cheque from the tax man arrived in the post today for £28.20. Not quite the hundreds that the MSE tax code checker predicted but still money that I would have otherwise not got! Being in the forces you expect everything to be in order too, but not so!

    :money:

Cheers, That'll nearly pay the £30 tax for my car this year (They always get you in the end!)

  • Thanks to the tax code checker I found I'd been on the basic rate since 2005 - and last week my refund of just over £7000 credited my bank account. Had I left it only a few months more I'd have lost at least £1000 of that as the deadline for claiming back 2005 tax is in February... most of it is going straight into a lump sum offpayment of my mortgage but might be a holiday in there too!

What can I say but thanks so much MSE!

  • Another update on my lastest Fiasco...
Just called them AGAIN and the amount has been calculated, and I should have the money 'By the end of January'... to say I should have recieved this amount by today again they are changing the rules to suit themselves...

HMRC are really rules to themselves. They told me that it is going through their 'standard security checks' so this will be the third time it has gone through them.... I am beginning to give up hope of ever getting the money. So from Sept/Oct when the claim started to recieving the money as told by them in December, then middle of January is now 'possibly' the end of January...

    Going to scream soon.......:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

  • I used the code checker and contacted them this morning, (after days of trying and being cut off because their phone lines were "busy"!) and have been told i'm entitled to just over £500! Very pleased, and very useful for january! :)

got this on mine when i checked does that mean im owed or in dept help would be great:D

    Reset
The number 622 in your tax code...

The tax code you've input says your tax-free allowance is...£6220 - £6229Based on ONLY the salary and age you've input,
    your personal allowance would be
(read more)£6475There's a difference of £255 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.
Does this mean my tax code's wrong?
Unless you have any other income, or deductions, your tax code could be incorrect. Remember, this is only a rough check, but it suggests your tax code doesn't match your age and salary.
Below are some typical reasons why this may be the case (there are others)...
    • You are also receiving a state or private pension
    • You have a company car
    • You get other benefits (eg, medical insurance)
    • You own a buy to let property
    • This is a tax code for a 2nd (or 3rd etc) job
However, even if they do apply that doesn't automatically mean your tax code is correct. It just means "your tax code shouldn't give the standard personal allowance for your age and salary", which it doesn't. If you feel there's a problem you may want to take this further.

The letter T in your tax code...

T.gifThe letter T indicates your tax situation is complex or changes frequently, therefore will need to be reviewed by HMRC every tax year.

It doesn't mean either. It's simply telling you that your Code number has £250 subtracted from the basic allowance of £6475.

You should have a P2(Coding Notice) from HMRC in Feb / Mar 2010 telling you why? Normally it's a 'benefit in kind' (medical insurance or similar) provided by your employer ...... it's a bit too small to be an underpayment (£50 x 20% = £250) from an earlier year.

If no P2 ........ you'll need to ring HMRC and ask.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

How could they? If you don't know why £250 is restricted from your Code .... no one else is going to.

Read my earlier post to you. If you can't find a P2 ....... then ring your HMRC office and ask them. The suffix 'T' indicates the deduction is subject to review ..... so it is worth pursuing it. It doesn't add up to much (£50 tax in a year) ... but you would be overpaying if the Code is incorrect.

  • And the saga continues...

Called them again today and they have finally released the amount on the 23rd January (a SUNDAY!! [and my birthday:beer:]) and I now have to wait another 14 working days before it MAY arrive, which is now ANOTHER 3 weeks of waiting!!

They are really extracting the urine now....
