it was 481L in 2005. i got a new code sent 2007-2008(when ive not been working) 522L

Normal tax code in 2005/6 was 489L so you're about £80 less than the normal.

You probably had a taxable benefit at the time like medical health insurance or a company car.

If you don't know why it's lower and you have no P2 coding notice to explain why there is no harm in phoning up. It won't be a great amount though unless you are due a further rebate through stopping work.
  • Thank you so much MSE for once again helping my husband and I reclaim money owed to us! My husband received a wonderful cheque for £2172 on New Years Eve, a fantastic start to 2011 :D xxx
    :money:...My hero!
  • Yet again more people getting their cheques super-quickly and I'm still being fibbed off with the "it takes our investigators 3-4 weeks to process rebates" excuse? Like a previous poster, it would be different if I owed them the thousand pounds!

  • I am now getting really peeved off with the HMRC...

Was told my rebate would be processed on the 29th November. Then was told it would be 24th December. When I called them last week, they told me that the date they had was 23rd December and have no recollection of the 29th November. It has been 'held back' for security checks and I should call in two weeks if I have not heard anything.

My original letter was sent on the 14th October and I am still waiting.. I know some people have had their cheques within a month. Money is very tight at the moment and this money will help us out alot. Should I try and call again and escalate the claim to a manager?

If I owed them, interest would be added and all other amounts as well, but because they owe me, they can take as long as they like, I have also heard interest is no longer paid on the amount owed...

Was that a letter from you ..... or (P800) from them? If the latter, the cheque should have been with you within 14 days. If the former - refunds for PAYE usually take 2 -3 months. Which is why it's always best to sort it out in-year and get it via the employer .. wherever possible.
, I have also heard interest is no longer paid on the amount owed...

Depends on the year. If it's 08-09 or earlier they will add a repayment supplement. But not for 09-10 until after 31st Jan.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Was a letter from me. They have actually told me I am due a rebate and that it was clear, but they now say it is going through security checks and they keep changing the dates....

  • I turned 65 in September 2009. For the tax year 2009/10 I have received only a proportion of the higher tax allowance of £9490 from my birthday until 5/4/2010. I have read that in the tax year when one turns 65 you get the whole of the tax allowance. Can anyone help please?
  • Well the latest on my fiasco....

They arranged an amount to be repaid on the 25th November, got checked and was found to be wrong!!! They cancelled that claim (did not tell me) and redid it on the 23rd December. That is when the clock started for their 14 working days. I now have to wait until the 13th January and if I have not recieved anything, to call them on the 14th.

Even though it was not my fault they made an error, they restart their 14 day clock on the NEW amount they calculated on the 23rd!!!

HMRC do seem to work in a world of their own, if I was on self-assessment and made a mistake I do not think their grace period would be so generous!!

Rant over until the 14th January
