success Tax rebate received today. I knew that my tax code was correct but as I left work in Jan this year, I had overpaid my tax. So after badgering the inlaand revenue I have got my tax rebate.
  • Have been told today that my rebate was calculated at my initial phone call in November - I had been on BR tax code for a whole year in 2005 although part time work as a student I still earned around £8k that year. Assuming (possibly unfairly) that the girl wouldn't pass my issue to my local office I then sent a letter & my original P60.

The guy today told me my letter us still probably stuck in someone's mail tray! But he is goin to check for me why the cheque hasn't been issued as it should have. Not sure how much it is, he said he couldn't discuss figures until the cheque is issued (?) but it's something & a success nontheless.

Thank you very much, the cut off date for claiming that year is next month so I came close to losing money that was owed to me :)

But - even if the 'phone call refund continues to be elusive ........ you've baselined the claim with your letter + P60. So the cut off date ceases to be an issue.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • I've never posted on any forum before but felt compelled too this time. Thanks to Money saving expert and a 5 minute phone call to the Tax office - I'm now £3,976 (plus 2010/11 to come) better off!

It turned out I have been paying for a company car I haven't had for the last 8 years - managed to claim back to 2004/05 - Just wish i'd found out sooner!

Thankyou MSE and merry christmas !!!!

I'm not that dim but I didn't realise I had been on the wrong tax code since I started my new job in 2004. 'BR' means 'basic rate' right? Well, where's my personal allowance?

A few phone calls to HMRC later and problem solved. The first time I was told by a very nice lady I would receive a re-calculation notice within 10 days, then a cheque for any over-payment within another 10 days. 12 days after the first call, I call back. 10 days is 10 working days - which is three weeks according to HMRC (no wonder they cant get their sums right) - so I should expect a letter no later than Dec 8. On Dec 11 I call them again and speak to a nasty cow who says she can't work out what's going on, what I had previously been told was all incorrect, she will refer my case to another dept and it will be a further 28 days before I hear anything, there is no supervisor available, I'm not allowed to talk to anyone else and should call back another time. BUT...two days later, I got a cheque for £8143 - and that doesn't include this year! I should be getting a refund in this month's pay packet for my overpayments since April 2010. Nice, but I wish I'd had the money each month when I needed it.

Thanks to this site, I now have to choose whether to put the cash into my ISA, pension, mortgage or new motorbike....

  • Four months ago I discovered I had been paying the wrong tax code since May, when I started my new job. I contected our outsource payroll company, who told me to call our tax office, which I did - and they told me I was on the tax code for two jobs! Turns out either they weren't notificed, or no-one changed my records, to say I'd signed off claiming JSA.

Then I was told I couldn't get it back until my code was changed to M1, which it eventually did, so I called up last month - to be told that no, it had to be on an 'accumulative basis' to get a refund of the £100s they'd taken from me - and when I asked how that could happen, they said that they didn't have a copy of my P45 despite my employer swearing blind they sent it!

So we sent another copy at the end of October and when I called up to check it had got there mid-November I was told that they don't log post as it comes in, only when it's opened, and at that time they had a backlog of 6 weeks for the post! So I won't even know until the new year as to whether they received it or not.

I feel bad venting here but I feel really frustrated that I keep getting told different things by different people and I really want my money back. It's not a huge amount, but I'm going on holiday early next year and it's enough to cover my flights which I'm still trying to payy off.

Don't feel bad, you are not alone, many people have been told incorrect information by some HMRC staff during telephone conversations.

As with any large organisation, different members of staff have varying levels of experience / knowledge.
If you are unfortunate enough to be speaking to one of the less experienced members, you may be given incorrect info (sometimes, I think they just want to tell you what they think you want to hear to get you off the phone, but I may be being too cynical)

  • Hi, I am from the Isle of Man, and my Tax Code is 920F. Do you know if this is the same tax code system as the UK? I filled in my code on the checker and got this, so looking at the message at the bottom don't know if it has worked or not.

"The number 920 in your tax code...
The tax code you've input says your tax-free allowance was... £9200 - £9209
Based on ONLY the salary and age you've input,
your personal allowance would have been
    (read more) £6475
There's a difference of £2725 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect."

BUT, AT THE END IT SAYS THIS...

"The letter in your tax code...
You seem to have entered invalid letters as part of your tax code

    Please check and try again."
