  • I was wondering if anyone could tell me exactly which number they are calling to get through to speak to someone?
The number I have (0845 300 0627) just seems to be an automated system which then tells me to go to the HMRC website to find out how to claim back tax.

My BF was on tax code BR for the whole tax year of 2009-2010, so am trying to help him claim that back!

    Many thanks!

If you have 3 x concurrent jobs ..... then 647L at one of them ..... means the others must be 'BR' (if you earn under £43875pa). Otherwise you may well underpay.

But - if the job against which the '647' is set ..... pays you less than £6475pa ............ you would be better getting your personal allowance apportioned among the jobs such that the allowance is fully utilised. Now HMRC are doing annual reconciliations .... and have a single PAYE record ...... you would get any refund automatically. But as that's the Sept following the year end ..... best to get it right in-year and not use them as a piggy bank?

thanks, making an estimated calculation (cos its relief work etc) it would be around £6500. for that job this year...but i'll be keeping me eye on it from now on:beer:
    totally a tog!:D

That's the right number if you've received an overpayment / underpayment letter? But you're wasting your time ringing ..... your BF has to do it. They won't discuss anything with you.

You're better doing it this way :

...but tempered with a little confusion

I've been hounding HMRC since February this year and I've finally received a letter from them today saying that I'm due a repayment. The thing is in the one letter that I received, there were 4 P800T forms. This in itself isn't too bad because I've been on the wrong tax code since 2004. Below is how I worked out what I should be getting back. Figures taken from bottom right of P800 where it says repayment due.

    2004 - 2005 - £176.20
    2006 - 2007 - £207.09
    2007 - 2008 - £279.22
    2008 - 2009 - £507.32

    Total = £1,169.83

Due to my inability to work out what the heck was going on, I called the tax office and asked if they could clarify and the young lady at the end of the phone told me that I would be receiving a cheque for £507.32.

At the risk of sounding greedy (I wasn't even expecting £200, let alone £500 :D), there seems to be a substantial difference between my final figure and HMRC

    Have I missed something?

Anyway, I'm a happy bunny this morning :D
  • I wonder if the person you spoke to didnt look at all the years. If you are happy that you have done your sums right, then you will get the amount you think is due.
  • Thanks Gertie. I'm hoping that it is the case but hey, I'm happy enough with the £500 :D

I think that the best thing that I can do is just wait until the cheque comes and goes from there. I'll keep you all updated.
  • Hi everyone! I didn't use the rebate checker because I started the whole process just before it was launched. However I recieved a cheque this morning for just over £1400!

I think the rebate checker is a great idea and I wish it had been launched a few weeks earlier. It would have saved me a lot of research time.

I'm getting my OH to check his tax code this week. Althoug I'm fairly certain he's due something back.

As it's something we didn't factor into our budget, it's going to be a nice little boost to our house deposit fund :)

I've been chatting on another thread for a while and one of the posters told me this. It could be why it's less than you expect but the other money should come along in time :)

No. The new system is initially set up just to do the comparisons for 08-09 and 09-10.

I did indeed. ;) But that's where HMRC are issuing unprovoked 'reconciliations'. They are only doing the two years. In this case :-

..... however, reds2501 has 'provoked' the issue .... hence the 4 x years. Normally the final P800 shows the summary of all of them ...... but, in this one, it rather looks as though the call centre HMRC person hasn't looked deeply enough. As the arithmetic of the 4 years doesn't appear to net to the final figure even if some of the earlier years are underpayments?

    Thank you!

It turned out he was just hanging up before he got put through to an operator! Yeah he's doing it today, I know they won't talk to me but it's me finding out the info to help sort it out because he wouldn't bother otherwise.
