babss and antony - phone the tax office and get a P2. This will show the extra alowances you have been given. Then we can help. Antony if the £60 extra allowance is correct you have been given tax relief of £12 per year. If this turns out to be not due HMRC will not ask for this tiny amount back.
Coolice - phone them.
KRZgirl - possibly the advisor didnt have enough time to advise him properly. Who has issued the code you are talking about - HMRC or the employer on the P60?0 -
I saw the tax checker the other night and checked out my code it was totally wrong and has been for the past six years!! I am ashamed as my mum was a wages clerk and always said to check but you assume you work for a large corporate firm they know what they are doing. Spoke to a lovely man at the tax office (well he was lovely because he is sending me a refund!!!). This will date back to 2004!! So far Martin has helped me get £3,000 back on overpayment of council tax, found me £30 tesco vouchers I had forgot about and now this. Not sure if I am lucky or not as I have been overpaying in several instances. :j0

Hi Gertie Walker,
I'm sure you are right about not having the time. I bet they are inundated.
My husband was told by his employer that they use the codes issued by HMRC.0 -
Hi guys, i just came across the tax checker and mine is coming back as
There's a difference of £1805 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.
My tax code was 0828l for the year.
I receive a salary of £19368 for the year with £4848 (£404 month) car allowance.
Is the car allowance included in my tax code? I am not sure if i am paying to much or to little and really dont want to phone the tax office incase of bad news as i believe my personal allowance is to high for some reason0 -
Your code number is very high and will have nothing to do with the car as this should be taxed through your pay. For your own peace of mind, you should ring HMRC and ask for a P2 - you dont have to query the code - just ask for a P2 for this year and then come back here when you receive it.0

As you have already posted :-There's a difference of £1805 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code
.......... your allowances exceed the normal basic £6475 by £1805 (£6475 + £1805 = £8280 ... = Tax Code 828). So you're getting a significant extra allowance ........ which will be shown on the P2 (Coding Notice) you almost cetainly get from HMRC? The P2 will give you the reason for the extra. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi, that makes sense to me, I have been getting a car allowance for nearly a year now and prior to that I know that in my tax code was an allowance for 20p per mile i done for the company i work for, i am now wondering if this is still being applied to my tax code, if so then undoubtably i will be getting a letter somewhere down the line saying i owe them money. For this tax year i did not apply to have the 20p mile allowance to be added as i was receiving the car allowance, in past years i have had to ring up on the new tax year and tell them about the 20p per mile and if i remember i had to send in a p60 form of the top of my head, i am now wondering if they carried it over into this year?0
