I have just used the checker and it says i over pay by £3795

How does it differentuate between overpayment and due?

    What wording are they using?

mines coming up with £175, but not sure if credit or debit:

Did the tax calculator for last tax year:

    Here are the results:o
The number 630T in your tax code...

The tax code you've input says your tax-free allowance was...£6300 - £6309According to my salary and age there is a difference of £175

my new tax code for this year is 647L

am i due a rebate or due them?

    Could be neither.

You have paid more tax than normal by about £35 but there could be a reason for this. What does your coding notice say?

I have used the tax code checker and put in the codes from 2005 to 2010 and although the codes are all different I get the same message:
There's a difference of £45 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.

I am employed by the education board and have superannuation and receive child tax credit.

I would really appreciate any help
    Thanks

Have a look at your P2 (Coding Notice(s)) ..... which will explain it? If your Code (this year) is higher than 647 ...... then you're getting an extra allowance for professional Subscriptions or similar. If it's lower ............ then you have a deduction for some (rather minor) benefit your employer gives.

(The £45 only makes a difference of £9 per year [£45 @ 20%] - whichever way it is)
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Is your code £45 higher or lower?

Are you a teacher claiming an extra allowance for professional subs?

  • Would it be best to phone them? or wait for a letter in the post...
my girlfriend got a letter other week she got £700 back... but I know my tax has been funny over the years and have the majority of my payslips & codes for the last 6 years... shall I phone?
  • I read MSE email on Wednesday & started checking through my husband's Tax Codes. After using the Tax Code Checker here I found them all to be wrong since 2004/5!
On Thursday, my husband received a refund letter and cheque from HMRC for £25.20 + 10p compensation. He hadn't even been in touch with them yet! However, this was only for the year 2008/09.
This morning (Friday) my husband phoned the tax office with all of the Tax Codes that had been issued since 2004 and all of the Personal Allowance amounts that he should have been entitled to. The Tax Advisor he spoke to told him that all of his tax codes had already been checked going back to then and they were correct. He said they can't be because they don't tally with the allowable amounts & would she please tell him how they have arrived at the codes issued. She said no she can't! The Advisor told him that they issue his employer with notification of a tax code to use so the employer must be using the wrong one. (We don't think the employer is at fault.)
He is now going to request all of the P6's (Notification of Tax Code) from his employer to include in a letter to the HMRC.
Was he just unlucky with getting the unhelpful Advisor or is that par for the course?

One interesting thing I came up with when checking last year's code 647L (which is the same as this's year because no change was made to the personal allowance). The code my husband has been issued is 634L which is a difference of £130. The exact amount that the Allowance was increased by in the Budget at that time. The increase for Index Linking was included but not the extra. This seems to be a consistant error throughout those years in my husband's case. Or am I imagining it??
Does anyone else have any theories for this error?
