I did indeed. ;) But that's where HMRC are issuing unprovoked 'reconciliations'. They are only doing the two years. In this case :-

..... however, reds2501 has 'provoked' the issue .... hence the 4 x years. Normally the final P800 shows the summary of all of them ...... but, in this one, it rather looks as though the call centre HMRC person hasn't looked deeply enough. As the arithmetic of the 4 years doesn't appear to net to the final figure even if some of the earlier years are underpayments?

Well that might explain what has happened with mine then *sorry peeps, this goes back to another thread* as I provoked it :) makes me feel a bit better. I love the tax man today (will probably hate him again when pay day comes around)

My wife had the dreaded envelope drop through the letter box however it turned out she had overpaid by £800 in 2008-2009 because she had 2 jobs and they'd used code BR for the lot.
She stopped that job in 2008 and it made us realise that even though she'd had a P45 for the 2nd job they continued to use code BR ever since even though they admitted they had received the P45 notification. Seems she's owed a further £2k which is unbelievable just before Christmas!! Although in fairness it is her hard earned money!! Clearly people with 2 or more jobs need to pay particular attention to how much they've been taxed.
  • I checked mine & my partner's tax code and his flagged up a problem. We weren't sure it was wrong though as he has a company car...so I printed off all the details from the site and he asked his work, who then spoke to the tax office. He came home from work with a big smile - he's owed nearly £900 in tax!! Thank you thank you!! :j

But you don't state your age? Code 647 is the basic code for up to 65 - this year (and last). You have an extra £60 in allowances over the basic (laundering uniform / professional subscription? Whatever - you must have claimed it?)

If you're not entitled to the extra .... you will be underpaying to the tune of £12pa.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !
  • Checked my tax code for the last few years and it seems they were wrong. Just received a tax rebate oh £128.00. Not a lot, I know, but better in my pocket. Thanx

Yay!! Thanks to MSE I have just received a tax rebate of £290. A much needed rebate, I might add.

And I hadn't even noticed my tax code was any different from last year's... THANKS!!
  • Well that was officially a worthwhile phone call to HMRC. On top of the £1400 cheque that I received last week I paid £-342 tax this month.

So far I've now had over £1740 back as a result of checking my tax code. We've decided to buy the TV that we've been after for ages and put the rest in our house deposit fund. We might even take a weekend away ;)
  • I should add that I contacted HMRC on the income tax helpline 0845 300 0627 but through saynoto0870.com I managed to find this number 01355 359022 which was free to call from my mobile (as I'm waiting for my phone line to be installed).
  • Thanks to this site, my wife discovered I'd been overpaying tax since starting my job in 1998.

Unfortunately, the 2004/05 cut-off point means I'll never see all the money I'm owed, but I'm here to report that I've so far received one cheque for £2506.75 and there's another one on it's way to me for £5656.01 making a total refund of £8162.76! :T

This will allow us to pay off all of our debts, loans, cards, and to make life more comfortable for us both.

My sincerest thanks to Martin and the team, and to all the forum members that support them.
