Similar thing for me - turns out I've been on the BR tax code for about 5 years - several months and letters later, I'm looking at a cheque for - wait for it - £6,705!! :j

Have they added the interest to that figure - don't forget to ask ;)

    good idea - thanks!
  • Well can I just say WOOOHOOOOO and a big thank you to MSE!! I've had a very hard time recently, after an op in July I was on sick pay for 2 months and during that time had my hours slashed at work, I got another job within 7 hours of being told my hours were being reduced BUT haven't been able to start yet thanks to one error after another from the company doing the crb check (claiming I hadn't paid for it despite the cheque having come out of my account etc etc)

In desperation I began scouring this site for ways to economise and get through this crisis. When I came across the tax calculator I realised I had overpaid last year, upon phoning hmrc they told me that I had actually been overpaying for 3 years, I received my calculations on friday and a cheque is on it's way for £2,000!!! To be followed by another £600 for this year so far once I start my new job!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you MSE, not only have I been able to get back all the money I have lost through being ill I've also learned so many day to day money saving tips that I have cut my monthly expenditure by £300!!!
    September GC £341/£300
  • Is there any way of checking if you've been over/under paid without your tax codes? My hubby has changed his job several times over the past few years, including being on jobseekers on occasion, but he hasn't kept any of his old payslips or P60s
  • Did my tax return last week (I am self-employed) and found out I overpaid tax by over £340! What came more as a shock was that I check my account balance yesterday and found the tax refund there! Less than a week, directly in my account!!!

Unfortunately the car needed a new cambelt so the tax return is spoken for...:(

Been meaning to post for a while. Cheque arrived about a month ago, over the moon! £3,536!!! Woooo Hoooo.

Used the checker and said I had over paid this year so all I did was call the number, spoke to a helpful man who asked me a few questions about my current year, all stuff that was on my P60. When he said I had over paid I asked him if he could go back 3 years as in that time i have had two children, varied my hours, lost health insurance and a company car and had an ex employer who was very untrustworthy. Gave him a few details and he said he would investigate and I would get a letter. When I got the letter not only had I over paid for the 3 years but the lovely man had gone back 5 or 6 years (cant remember which sorry) and I had overpaid for all that time! Cant tell you what a difference that money has made. MSE and Mr Lewis you ROCK!
  • Hi - after checking on your tax code calculator I followed the procedures and wrote off to the tx office... it took about 5 months to hear, I'd actually forgotten I'd written off to them, but yesterday I received a cheque for £519 for the year 2009-2010!

I'm absolutely delighted as I'm getting married next December and every penny counts at the moment!

Thanks MSE for your help! :)
  • Not directly as a result of MSE, but I knew I was on the wrong code after only receiving 1 coding notification in the last 3 years.

After being made redundant, I was still entitled to some 'Benefit in Kind' for 6 months due to my contract (which also boosted my redundancy by an extra 6 months pay), so I knew it was going to be a little complicated.

I knew that my Tax Code was taking into account Benefit in Kind (usually done 1 year in arrears), so didn't pursue it straight away, but when my tax code didn't change again this year I went through and checked.

I thought I was entitled to around £1300 but possibly more due to complications of paying Tax on redundancy (on amounts over 30k), I wasn't sure.

Spoke to nice lady at the Tax Office (they aren't nasty people), sorted this years but had to send a letter to explain the other years, turns out I was due more than I thought, including this years I got £3000.

Give them all the information you can and they will sort it out.

    Christmas is no longer cancelled.

I got a letter from the tax dept last week with attached cheque for £745.92, it came automatically as I had not got around to checking it out, it was for year 2005/2006 when I left work due to ill health.
It is a great amount of money and has been put straight into my savings account. Thanks Martin for alerting us to this, you are AMAZING:money:

  • I had a nice and unexpected surprise in the post this morning to tell me that I overpaid during 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 and I am due over 2.9k back :D:D I can't quite beleive it, leep pinching myself and had to read the form out to OH over the phone to check I hadn't misread it!

I am ill at the moment and I can't begin to tell you how much this has cheered me up!
