I looked up my tax code which was 474k. this meant I paid tax on my full wage AND an extra £4740!
I work for a large gas company and assumed they would report my circumstances correctly to the IR but not so.
I queried it and within a week I had a cheque for just over £1600 through the door, I paid no tax the following month and my new tax code is 272L.
In total I got back just over 2 grand (they had mistakenly trebled my company cars taxable benefits quota, which I had been over paying for more than a year!)

I, like a lot of people, was under the impression that the Inland Revenue held records for 6 years. On a claim i made i just missed out on a year, as i was informed they only keep records for 5 years and 10 months. People need to be aware of this. Will let yiou know later how much i got back0

The records are on the system for the full 6 years, i.e. the oldest year drops off on 6th April when the tax year starts a fresh. But it is the deadline for the claim which is currently 5 years 10 months.
HOWEVER, people need to be aware that the timescales are changing to 4 years following the end of the tax year in which the claim is due.
This change happens in 2012.
The deadline for all 2005/06 PAYE claims is 31/01/2012
The deadline for all 2006/07 PAYE claims is 31/03/2012
The deadline for all 2007/08 PAYE claims is 05/04/2012
and each year following is 4 years from the end of the tax year in which the claim is due.
This bring PAYE into line with Self Assessment claims for which the deadline is 4 years from the end of the tax year in which the claim is due.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Towards the end of maternity leave, when I wasn't getting much I realised I was paying a lot of tax on a small amount of money, I'd never really paid any attention before that. I used the tax calculator and it turns out for the last 5 1/2 years at my job I had been paying tax as if I had 2 jobs! I filled in my forms and in a few weeks I got a rebate for over £5000! (about £5150 I think) How fantastic! I would never have saved that amount myself and it couldn't've come at a better time.0

I used the MSE tax code checker, which was very easy and clearly explained, and managed to get a rebate of nearly £400 for a two year period0

I have used the online self-assessment website for the last 5 years, mostly without a hitch. Doing so results in an immediate verification of tax outstanding/overpaid, and soon there after a new tax code is issued. Has anyone found that they still owe/are owed using the self-assessment approach?0

I checked my code and found it was wrong, had been on the wrong code since starting a new job in August 2008. They thought I was claiming my pension instead I had only just started paying into it so I was on basic rate. I got a total rebate for the 31 months I had over paid of £3,464.86 :j0

As advised i contacted the HMRC, they informed me that i am currently on the wrong tax code so they put me on the right on, i mentioned my previous years i felt i had over paid and i was told that they had sent me two cheques out in previous years when i had over paid which i never recieved!!!! The lady on the phone said this would be investigated and i would need to put it in writting to them. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this??0

If you have moved home without informing HMRC of your change of address, then those cheques could have been sent to a previous address.
Make sure that your letter to HMRC asks them to check your tax records for previous years, re-issue any cheques sent that have never been cashed and update your address details if appropriate. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
