How to get a tax rebate inc Tax Code Checker

Hi
Can anyone help me please. I rang the tax office last year and iIthought this was all sorted but its not!
I had been on BR CUMUL for quite a few years because my income total was over the allowance. My circumstances changed in September 2012 but I never informed them until February 2013. They split my allowance between a pension and my main income of employment. So it meant 444L code for my deceased Husbands pension. And 524T for my main income. I also received a £695.00 tax re bait.
Then I received a letter saying I owe them £775 for not paying enough tax? They also said they would take it off 2014-2015 tax code? I rang them and said how come I owe you this when you gave me a rebait? they said they will send me out a letter as they couldn't discuss this over the phone?? and if I still wasnt happy with this then ring us again.
I received a new tax code letter from them saying tax code for 2013-2014 was 542L.
Thinking this was all sorted and they had made a mistake I was fuming to receive my allowance for this year the my tax code is... 159T!!! this is a joke!! they said this was because I owe them £795.00 still and to pay it back they have reduced my allowance for the next year? I cannot see how I owe them this? why did they give me a rebait? I have been working for the NHS for the last 10 years so its not as though my employment had changed. I have rang them but been on hold for 25 mins on many occasions so i just want to give up!! But they still havent explained to me why I owe them money?
Please help? is this correct because Think they have made a mistake? I am so angry and frustrated because they havent explained why I owe them money?
Thank u

Did you check the details on the calculation they sent you when they gave you the rebate?
The rebate will have been based on the figures they had on their systems at the time. If, after that, either your employer or your pension provider sent them income figures that they didn't have before, then they have to look at the tax year again. It may be that you weren't meant to get that rebate in the first place. When they send out rebates, they are relying on the taxpayer to check the calculation thoroughly and contact them if it's incorrect. Unfortunately, if the taxpayer cashes the cheque when they are not due that money, the responsibility usually lies with them - they will say you should not have taken a rebate that you weren't due and therefore you owe money back.
This may not be the reason for your underpayment but, with limited information, it's the first thing that sprang to mind. You need to gather all of your pay and tax figures from the relevant tax year and then compare it to the details on their calculations to work out what has gone wrong.0 -
I had been on BR CUMUL for quite a few years because my income total was over the allowance.
That isn't a reason for having a BR tax code. BR is normally used for a second income.
Did you have more than one income at this time? If so what was the tax code for the other income? My circumstances changed in September 2012 but I never informed them until February 2013. They split my allowance between a pension and my main income of employment. So it meant 444L code for my deceased Husbands pension. And 524T for my main income. I also received a £695.00 tax re bait.
Did you check the calculation that came with it to make sure you were entitled to the rebate?Thinking this was all sorted and they had made a mistake I was fuming to receive my allowance for this year the my tax code is... 159T!!! this is a joke!! they said this was because I owe them £795.00 still and to pay it back they have reduced my allowance for the next year? I cannot see how I owe them this? why did they give me a rebait?
You may not have been entitled to it if, for some reason, they didn't match up the 2 sources of income.I have been working for the NHS for the last 10 years so its not as though my employment had changed.
No but it sounds like your circumstances changed as you said earlier. When did you start to receive the pension? What tax code was used for the pension?I have rang them but been on hold for 25 mins on many occasions so i just want to give up!! But they still havent explained to me why I owe them money?
They will normally send out a letter with the exact calculations. This is what you need to check and see if you agree with the figures. Please help? is this correct because Think they have made a mistake? I am so angry and frustrated because they havent explained why I owe them money?
It could be correct. We don't know either without the figures. If you can provide them we can check.0 -
Hi all,
Can I grab some advice based on the following?
Tax year 13/14 I worked on and off for a temp agency from April 2013 until January 2014. When I wasn't working for the agency I was claiming JSA.
My tax code throughout the tax year was BR W1 which I believe offers no allowance and just taxes you 20% flat? This was my only job and I had no other income.
I've confirmed my taxable JSA which is £174.00 and my total gross was £9745.00 whilst my PAYE Tax Paid was £1040.60.
I assume this information entitles me to a rebate and after phoning HMRC today they are now processing my rebate claim but can anyone offer a rough figure of what kind of return I'll be looking at? My (very) sketchy maths leads me to think about £700/800 but I could be hugely wrong.
If any more information is needed please let me know. Also any advice on anything would be great.
Thanks0 -

9745 + 174 = 9919 - 9440 = 479 x 20% = 95.80 - 1040.60 = £944.80The only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Super. Got to wait the usual 10-15 days to get my assessed figure but anything is better than nothing.
Will see how close it is to that! I'd be delighted with £950!0 -

Good luck with thatThe only thing that is constant is change.0 -
Well yes...we'll see about that but I'll keep some optimism for now!0

I feel that this calculator only complicates matters.
A list of allowances and how to check your coding would be of more use. It is simple enough to check the coding notice with information on allowances.
From some of the postings it is clear that people are using the calculator without reading the the footnote on the many possible deductions.
I wonder how many confused state pensioners are putting an increased burden on the HMRC by querying the thousands of pounds of overpaid tax that the calculator indicates. Anyone of pensionable age should be alerted against using the calculator when they insert their age.if i had known then what i know now0 -

I agree, tbh. I have a feeling that people will only read Step 1 and think they are due a large refund (and won't see the smaller figure in step 3). Step 2 also isn't much use as it simply says "check for deductions" but doesn't say where, and most people will not have their coding notice to hand when they are using this calculator. Essentially, anyone with a non standard tax code could put their details into that calculator and believe they were due a rebate.0
