Fast forward a month later and I've started my new job. I got my P45 across to my new employers on my first day and as far as I know it was processed correctly.

if it had been processed your pay would have used the tax code on the P45 - what was it?

It may have been too late for the first payrun though.
I've had two letters from HMRC to tell me my new tax code for 14-15, and 15-16 is D0.

When did you receive these? Did you not query it at the time with HMRC?
I was paid today and, lone behold, I've been taxed a considerable amount and my take home pay is much lower than I'd anticipated. I read up and it looks like the D0 is mainly used when somebody has a second job. Which I don't have.

HMRC probably issued the tax code just at your changeover of jobs so thought you had started a 2nd job.
I'm guessing a call to HMRC will help clear this up? And I can get back what I've overpaid?

Yes call HMRC asap. You won't get it back automatically this tax year as that would have been your last pay of this tax year. You will get it refunded after the tax year end.

I really ought to check whether I have overpaid... however I do not have my tax codes for all employment since 2011, when I last had a tax rebate.

Am I still able to find out whether I am due a tax rebate?

    Thanks in advance

I earn 32k and my husband earns roughly the same but I pay so much more (£200+) in tax and NI than he does. Difference is he works for government and I work for a large global IT company. I saw in the guide, my code should be 1060L but mine is 902L. Whats confusing is I do receive company benefits. Ive checked at work and clearly states which of these are taxable (self & partner critical illness which is £11 pm and self private medical which I dont pay anything for). Would these affect the code?

Yes they would reduce your code so that you pay tax on them. You should receive a P11d each year to tell you the value of any taxable benefits.

You should also have received a coding notice that explains how it is made up.

Hello, just wondered if you could include an extra drop down option so that un-taxed income could be included in a column.I have an old age pension,a private works pension, but I also receive a mobility allowance which I believe is tax-free.I am confused as to where this DWP allowance should go in the calculator. Thanks,Gary (Blackpool).:)
