  • Hi all first time here so go easy on me
can anyone tell me if there is any tax help for say someone of 51 years old married but husband has been on incapacity benefit since 95 and earning about £1,200.00 a month after tax and deductions, husband gets £112.00 a week benefit.
just seems all the work i do we never seem to have anything to save at the end of the month
    many thanks Mel
  • On my payslip it says my tax code is 821L/0. I know the 821L is saying I'm a basic tax payer with an allowance of £8215 but what does the /0 mean?

It usually means a cumulative code, 1 or X means a week or month 1 code where what has happened in previous weeks or months is ignored

I ran my tax code for 2012/13 which was 357P. My tax allowance is £10500 but that is reduced due to an old age pension, yet your calculator says I have massively over paid tax. Is HMRC correct or this calculator?

What gross and tax figures do you have and what tax figure did the calculator give for this gross?

My point is that HMRC say that my Tax allowance should be reduced by the amount of my old age pension, which resulted last year in a tax code of 357. The calculator says that my tax code should not have been lower to 357 but, by the figures it produced, should have remained at 1050.

You are misunderstanding the results of the tax code checker. You need to read right through to the end for different circumstances

You have an allowance of £10K odd - yes

You also have other earnings - or you wouldn't have a tax code at all

You are liable for tax on the whole of your income (ISAs etc aside)

There is no way of deducting tax on your state pension at source - so it has to be done through your other earnings

So your tax code is reduced to collect more tax on the earnings. Depending on how much they and your pension are that could still be nil

Whether the figures are actually right in your case - pass, since we don't know what they are.

Yes. I did misunderstand the simplicity of the calculator. I don't suppose it can calculate the variables of an O A P. Thanks. Been back and explored the calculator thoroughly.

Proberbly but without full figures cannot say for certain.
As now on JSA if Jobcentre have your full tax details they will pay any rebate if any due (no idea when); if they do not have full details when you get your P60 from them you will have to contact the tax office.
