  • Hello, for tax year 2007/2008 I over paid tax (due to incorrect tax codes and tax rates issued to me and my employer). I just filed to file my return but HMRC says its too late and that all I can do is to make a disclosure... is there something I can do in order to get the refund paid to me? thank you for your help

No one can tell you if this is correct or not unless you give the full figures to be checked. Tax code, tax basis, taxable gross to date, tax paid to date and tax week or month number from last payslip to start with.

    taxable todate 35548

Quick calculation suggests that your tax is about £20 to low if we assume 510L has been your tax code all year. Has this code changed during this tax year if so you may be on a non-cumulative tax basis which could account for this.

First re your code, this is not the normal allowance so I assume that you either have a taxable benefit from your employer or some tax underpaid adjustment. Do you know why your tax code is 510L?

Second regarding your tax basis this usually shows just after your tax code could be something like 1.0,X, non-cumulative, cumulative or an abreviation of these.

Third when you used the tax calculator did you put in your tax code and is it possible that you used the yearly tax allowance though you are only entitled tp 42/52 of it at this point?
  • hi thanks for that

i have a company van as i work away and no i dont know why this is my tax code

The 1 after your code would mean that the code is being applied on a non-cumulative basis and suggests that the code used before this was higher and accounts for the small differance in the tax that I mentioned. The tax office usually put codes onto a non-cumulative basis when they change them to a lower figure. If 510L is the correct tax code for this year then there will be a small underpayment of tax at the year end which I would assume will be adjusted in your next tax code. These adjustments are often a bit out of step with the tax deductions so small adjustments can go on for some time.
  • I can't use the calculator as I have a BR and BR/X code and have no idea how to work out if I am owed anything. Until September I had just one regular job. Now I do supply work I get paid for agency work through an umbrella company and have the BR/X code with them but most of my work comes via supply work done independently of the agency, they use the BR code. Added to this I changed umbrella companies in November, passed on the P45, but the first company hadn't taken into account the tax I had paid from April to September and I was whacked with a huge chunk of tax. HMRC tell me I will get this back but now I'm not sure if I've had it - sometimes the umbrella company seem to take loads of tax, sometimes they appear to give me a rebate! the only consistent pay is from the independent job and even then I'm sure I'm paying more tax than I should. It all seems to be a real mess, and I'm really not earning mega bucks here!
  • I had to ring HMRC yesterday as I've had a few employers this financial year. I am also on supply, with umbrella company forone agency and BR for the other agency. The helpful man at HMRC told me what to do. Wait until the end of the financial year, get your P60's, then send them to HMRC stating that you need a review of your taxes. Send it to:
    HMRC
    PAYE & Self Assessment
    PO Box 1970
    Liverpool
    L75 1WX

I'm going to be doing this every year that I work for more than one agency.
