When putting in a D1 tax code (Which means that all income is taxed at 50%), the calculator says "you have a personal allowance of between £10 and £19, based on the number "1" in your tax code". This is obviously nonsense, and at the bottom of the page, when explaining the letter, it correctly says what D1 means. But it can't be hard to put in something that doesn't give WRONG advise. Same thing for a "K" code, which is a negative PA.

Granted, I doubt many people of MSE are on a D1 code, but nevertheless, it is a shame that it can't be fixed.

The article says that if you do not hand in a P45 or P46 before the first pay day, you may be put on a BR code. This is wrong. A BR code is no longer used in this situation. The code that someone would be on by default if they didn't hand in a P45/P46 on time is 0T/w1m1, which means £0 personal allowance, and on a non-cumulative basis. This differs from BR in that it also accounts for 40% tax if paid more than £2916 in the month.

Presuming you earn over £8105 per year, your tax is correct. The code BR means that all your pension income is taxed at the basic rate. What they have done is give you all your personal allowance on your job and none on your pension. While you remain in full-time work, this will ensure you pay the correct tax. If this changes you need to make sure your codes are adjusted.

How are they robbing you? It's precisely the same rate as you would pay if the pension was a 2nd job.

My son has sent of a letter to reclaim taxes paid in previous years [he only works part time cleaner, and is disabled] he was also claiming for upkeep of his uniform for the past few years, received a letter stating that his tax code would be increased to 851L due to him overpaying tax in previous years, then yesterday, received another letter stating that his tax code was now 815L - must be because of uniform request? although i did apply for previous years, do not understand these codes, and will it make any difference to him, as he only earns 7200 per year?

Any help would be very much appreciated, many thanks.

at the income level you mentioned, there will be no difference between 815L and 851L - either way he will pay no tax.

Hi, thanks for your help, just to mention, that the letter to my son, stated that he had overpaid tax in previous years of 345pds, and that his tax code was now going to be 851L, then he received another letter stating that his tax code was now 815L, with no mention of tax being overpaid? I have claimed for uniform upkeep for the past few years, so should he not get this as a rebate if he has paid tax? If they just alter his tax code, dut to his income, he will not feel any benefit. I have just rung the tax office, but due to his inability to answer any security questions, they have now advised me to write a letter which includes his written authortity to give them permission to give me details, which i am now in the process of doing, they have informed me that this can take up to six weeks to include on the system. Anyway, in the meantime, thanks ......
