If you want to download apps you have two choices .
One search the internet and locate an APK file for that download then download and or copy to phone run the APK file .Provenance of file unknown could be third fourth or tenth party .
Or using App brain you open App Brain type locater in the search box click install thats it its auto installed and auto updated . Its third party in that it links to the Android Market .
You can off course use the Android Market directly both require a Google account to sign in with .
Still would like to know how to stop screen going into save mode after a very short time while studying the icons. Anyone know the command to change screen refresh or sleep option, whichever it is?
Normally on Android its settings display screen time-out .

He doesn't have any apps at present - only those Orange functions it comes with and which he has activated so far, so no he doesn't have a bar code scanner. (No mention of one in user guide).
He did go into the Orange shop nearest us for some advice on Xmas eve (not the one where he bought it) but they were not much help as the assistant said he was not familiar with that phone.
I phoned up Orange who told me how to activate internet access (via 3g which was not activated and shop assistant did not know how to activate it) and he does now have internet access. No googlemail account yet though.
I imagined you could download apps direct from the internet assuming they were android compatible, direct onto the phone's memory card so i am confused a bit by having to go via a 3rd party interface (AppBrain or Orange Market)? Why again?

What Android phone does he have?
for example
On the HTC Wildfire, you would press the button next to "Phone".
This would load the Application list. And in here there is Android Market application, which you load.0 -
as I said before about screen time out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8WKosZ1Prg (click 'menu' button when on the homescreen and then select 'settings')
watch this, that is how you open the app tray (this is the orange branded one) also from this vid it shows that the phone does have the android market.0 -
Thanks - found the screen time out setting in Settings/Sound and Display/Screen Timeout. Default was 15 secs now set to 30 secs.
The phone is a Samsung Galaxy Apollo aka GT-I5801
Sorry just checked with OH (now back indoors) and what he has found so far on the phone is the Orange Apps Shop not Android Market. Will try out sugggestions above.0 -
Has anyone downloaded any decent cycle rout apps on their android phones. I downloaded one a few weeks ago and the name escapes me at the moment but it was not very good. Ive just been looking at one on android market site and there is one called bike route which looks interesting but just asking if anyone has any good one's.
What I'm looking for is a sort of sat nav for bikes.
Regards.

A couple of ideas
Bike hub is a free dedicated bikers navigation aid however just tried to input a destination from my home and it failed to show shortest route. I also found it difficult to load and the read maps etc
Google navigator which is already installed on Android phones has a walkers route option and it came back with what I regard as the quickest and best route via bridleways
There is also an android app called gvSig Mini. Here you can download free of charge 1 :10000 and 1:50000 OS maps all genuine and free of charge under the OS OpenData scheme Also this app has lots of specialist maps to download both UK and some EU including a UK designated cycle route map.
Any of the above used at the same time as say the Android inbuilt
" My Tracks" makes a very powerful Sat nav system which includes route recording, route altitude profiles etc
All the above is Free of charge and another reason the Garmins and Tom Tom of this world dont like Google :rotfl:

Thanks for that Joihn1. The cycle hub one is the one i downloaded and it was slow and did not seem to work on my phone. I too found it difficult to read the maps so i deleated it.
I like the sound of the gvsig Mini. sounds just what I'm looking for and will give it a go thanks once again.0 -
