Free and useful Android apps
Options
I was wondering if anyone could recommend Free Android apps for my Desire.
I would like a Satnav app that you can download the maps direct to the SD card would be nice, I saw openmaps are downloadable, said basics was free, advanced maps had to pay for. But if it gives the basic satnav functions to get me from A-B and sort out a missed road occationally.
I already have Watchdog, App Killer and new browser.

3G Watchdog is very useful. You might want to install APNDroid as well which can work in conjunction and actually turn off your data connections when you reach the limit.
App Killer? I guess you aren't using Froyo. In Android 2.2, these become redundant as Google have removed the API to kill tasks. I used be a bit anal about trying to free memory but now the OS does a fantastic job of managing applications and memory.
Sorry to not answer your question with a free offering but the one other application I wouldn't be without is Tasker. It's £3.99 in the Android Market.
This application enables you to automate tasks based on events/contexts. For example, you can turn on your WiFi automatically when you get into your home network. You could also set up an auto responder to SMS messages or calls during the night. It can be fairly daunting at first, but it's very powerful and turns the device into complete powerhouse.0 -

You don't need to 'close' apps down, just go back to the homepage or do something else.
As long as there's memory available, application processes can keep running in the background and be automatically brought back to the foreground if needed.
If memory is low or Android determines the process is not needed based on set of rules, it kills it. If you need to go back to that application, the state is preserved so, it should appear as you left it.
All of this goes virtually unnoticed by the user, as application processes are swapped in and out of memory as required in the same state.
There's a bit more to it than this, as developers can manage components in slightly different ways, but essentially the OS works pretty well without any user intervention with application and process termination.0 -

I've found (for Scotland anyway)- you can simply go to Google Maps, go to your location or town you want and type bus stop it will give you all the nearest stops and a simple click on them will give latest departures at nearest stops. Equally Traveline websites are as good. Saves installing another app and I just begrudge paying when it is available with a couple more clicks for free :money: Of course Traveline Scotland's App on the Apple store is free and good, gives traffic info and live cameras too.0 -

Also the BACK button closes most programs if you need to .
