very true, my mistake, I was jumping the gun and thinking of google checkout for paid apps

I don't have that on my Android which is why I wondered what it was.

Presume its the button marked APPLICATIONS on some Android phones .

You don't need a google account to download apps

Might be true but AppBrain is the tool of choice as gives easy access to all market apps .

As I said, he was looking at Lookout, which is free in its basic version and among other things, tells you where the phone is when you have lost it. (I don't know if it is available for London, need to confirm this).

If you go onto the Lookout website, it has a number of options for downloading, including one marked Androids. This tells you to go to the App(lications) folder on your phone and download it from there.

In the user guide for OH's phone (Samsung Galaxy Apollo) it says "to Download Applications from Android Market", Open Applications list and select Market/Ts and Cs/Category- item/Install or Buy.

Lookout needless to say is not in there and nor are any of the apps his friends have recommended. So do we assume Android Market is just a selection of apps as approved by Orange and not the full range available?

We have found another short section in the user guide called Download Files from the web. This tells us to "download files or web applications, your device saves them in a memory card"...then follow a lot of warnings about possible viruses and Digital Rights Management and then it directs us to use Idle Mode/Browser/Settings/Applications/Unknown Sources. It stops there. No further instructions given.

Is this where we select apps not shown on the Android Market screen?

Android Market belongs to Google not Orange Possible Orange restrict users .

App Brain download that from the market and you will find Lookout Mobile Security .

Took me 10 seconds to find it .
App Brain is installed on phone and computer log in with Google account .
Select apps from computer or phone and push to phone .

I know you don't but I don't understand what having, or not having, a google account has to do with App Brain, or am I connecting two unconnected statements?

You log into AppBrain with your Google account.

(An AppBrain account is especially useful when you pick your apps on AppBrain on your desktop PC's browser and then sync the list to your phone and download them there)

    Thanks for that.

I don't have an App Brain account just download the stuff I need and have only downloaded stuff directly on the phone.

He doesn't have any apps at present - only those Orange functions it comes with and which he has activated so far, so no he doesn't have a bar code scanner. (No mention of one in user guide).

He did go into the Orange shop nearest us for some advice on Xmas eve (not the one where he bought it) but they were not much help as the assistant said he was not familiar with that phone.

I phoned up Orange who told me how to activate internet access (via 3g which was not activated and shop assistant did not know how to activate it) and he does now have internet access. No googlemail account yet though.

I imagined you could download apps direct from the internet assuming they were android compatible, direct onto the phone's memory card so i am confused a bit by having to go via a 3rd party interface (AppBrain or Orange Market)? Why again?

Still would like to know how to stop screen going into save mode after a very short time while studying the icons. Anyone know the command to change screen refresh or sleep option, whichever it is?
