Since getting my smartphone I am amazed at what it can do, that I would never have expected a mobile phone to be capable of. The Star Trek fan in me is buzzing in glee. :p

My point, I guess, is that people browsing this thread might not realise they want or need an app until they've discovered its existence. Personal example - I've just gotten an app that can tell me where the local bus stops are, and what buses leave from them, at what time, based on my GPS position (called "Catch That Bus"). Until now I'd have to leaf through timetables (if they were even accurate) or, if I'm stuck away from home, phone my mum and bother her to look them up. What a grand idea this app was. Saves tonnes of time.

I agree about not having phones cluttered with useless apps though... I've downloaded, tried, and uninstalled a lot of apps since getting the phone. So many music player apps to choose from, for example, I'm trying out two just now (MixZing and PowerAMP).

You dont need an app for that! Dont waste the internal memory when google maps can do that for free and a lot more too.

On your phone, if you have google maps installed, just open the places icon (better still install the shortcut to the app on one of ytour home screens), after opening that app, you get icons for many thiungs like - restaurants, coffee, pubs, hotels, attractions, ATMs, etc. You can create more icons like petrol stations, Bus Stop, Tube Station, Train Station, Hospital, GP, Dentist, Taxi etc etc. Clik anything and the app will use your location (wifi or gps or approx location using mobile signal masts) and give a list of services requested based on your distance from them. it will give tabs for phone, map, directions, address etc. just one clik will navigate you there, or call them etc. This will be useful anywhere in the world (if you have a data connection that is and keep in mind the roaming data charges). You dont have to ask anyone for directions or taxi number etc anywhere.

For example the Bus Stop tab will give a list of nearest bus stops and give walking directions and distance to that bus stop and a link for all bus numbers that operate from that bus stop with accurate times (updated by the minute!). saves you typing your location as that is pre-entered on the travel website, you just need to enter your destination or choose the bus numbers already populated on your screen with next bus time for that particular bus stop.

make sure you teach your family how to use this google maps / places feature as it will be very useful while travelling especially if you land late at night at a isolated train station with no taxi rank. In such a situation just open the app and hit the taxi button and it brings up the local taxi numbers based on the distance their office is located from the station. very useful feature that i have used. same applies for hotels etc.

You can configure that feature for anything, airports etc. dont waste memory on apps duplicating what google maps does in a much better manner and free too.

oh theres an app for that too!:rotfl: try the pulse app, i forget the name, there is one (FOR FREE) which reads your pulse and gives the number when you put the finger on the optical track pad if your phone has an optical track pad. not useful for me but just mentioning that there is an app that detects life signs too for free! :rotfl:

I've been looking for some more and found a great list here:-

    Clicky

I've started using the Shelves app after reading the article:-

Shelves - scan bar codes on my DVD collection and it adds them. Then search them by title, actor, etc. Great for people with a big collection who want to see what they've got. Also has a loaned out function to track which ones you have lent other people.

I've also tried Swiftkey trial and I'm very impressed so may have to purchase it.

for any database collection or related stuff, not much can beat the apps - handbase for android or memento app. handbase is a paid app and well known cross platform app. mememto has free and paid versions.

check out the free version of memento as it does lots of tracking stuff like dvds, books etc etc and a lot lot more. same goes for handbase for android.

    Numbers
    Numbers 1-50
    On-the-go
    Shapes

    also check out...
Kid Mode (it gives age appropriate activities for children and locks phone etc)

loads of other similar kids teaching aids ... free and paid versions. the free versions by 5pumkins are great. My two year old loves them and learns quicker I guess.

try Magicmarker. my child enjoys drawing shapes on it. some others like fingerpaint are ok too.
