I'm not really feeling it but if the twin is New York then the capital and Southern rival would be Washington DC. The Washington monument is occasionally referred to as a stele and was raised to commemorate the founding father of the USA. It was completed in 1885 and the Statue of Liberty back in New York was raised the next year, 1886. Can't find anything that goes with victory though or any famous sea journeys starting in 1886.

I reckon that we are on the right track with New York. Looking again at the first line, perhaps "any clone" could be read as "a N.Y. clone"

Searching for "Victory and Liberty" has brought up this:-

    http://ww2db.com/image.php?image_id=7081

Don't know yet if it ties in at all.
  • Im back up in Pennsylvania! :D Im very muddled now as I cant remember how I got here tbh ! The 'History 'part I remember here I got v Excited but cant remember why!! Lots of New York, shifting of capitals/capitols etc but am a bit frazzled now
  • I went a slightly different way by skipping ahead

I searched victory and liberty :- The Victory and Liberty Monument at the Tysiąclecia Sq. (locally known as "The Eagle") by the Chrzanovian sculptor Marian Konarski. It was raised in 1971 in memory of the residents of Chrzan!w who fell during World War II.
    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrzan%C3%B3w

and searched wild sea :- Baltic was called the "Wild-ze" meaning "wild sea".
    from http://webspace.webring.com/people/gu/um_5655/geneaology.html

which kept me in the poland area but i can't connect backwards or to 38 degrees

then randomly PoW rather than prisoner of war could mean Prince of Wales which would mean the The HMS Prince of Wales from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Prince_of_Wales_(53)

as you can probably tell i've gone link crazy and still can't get past clone really, although also started by thinking the US and washington/montgemery north south etc when i first read the clue.

    hmm!?!?!?

I have to say that that SOUNDS very plausible.

  • I wonder if the "prone" part, although there to rhyme with clone, is referring to the flattening of the Twin Towers?

  • RE: Victory and Liberty -
    ...

During World War II, the statue remained open to visitors, although it was not illuminated at night due to wartime blackouts. It was lit briefly on December 31, 1943, and on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when its lights flashed "dot-dot-dot-dash," the Morse code for V, for victory.

  • I'm just burbling now - 38 Degrees I can't quite link yet, although there have been some good suggestions so far.

IN A CITY OF SPAS WE FIND IN ANY CLONE
A PARTNER, ONCE CAPITAL, NOW PRONE

TO LAMENT ITS STATUS LOST TO SOUTHERN RIVAL
WHOSE STELE ENSURES ITS FATHERS SURVIVAL

NEXT YEAR VICTORY AND LIBERTY WAS RAISED TO PLEASE
OR A SAD DEPARTURE ACROSS WILD SEA AT 38 DEGREES

OLDEST OF FRIENDS, FAR AWAY TO THE NORTH
    A POW ONCE SALLIED FORTH

WAS FETED BY A BEAU AND INSCRIBED BY A POPE
MODEST IN SCALE AND COLOURED TAUPE!

    WHAT AND WHERE AM I?

I hope you don't mind, I have copied the text out so we can copy and paste it if needs be. saves writing it every time.
