I've not had problems whether ports are forwarded or not. (99% of the time ports aren't forwarded, only forward them when testing some setups - very rarely).
I can call without forwarding but the call quality is crap, so that's the advice I've been given YMMV ! :)
  • Mine is behind a Netgear Router DG834PN and used to work great, it is just in the last few days / week that is starting playing up and the TA612V would not register with VOIPcheap. BTW if you go on http://www.voipcheap.com/en/buycredits.html
The login does not work, hence I suspect Betamax / Voipcheap's authentication system has gone bust. I could try VOIPstunt but I just loaded 10 Euros of credit on Betamax!

    1) it is possible to use another voip provider like voipcheap for outgoing whilst simultaneously being able to receive incoming calls via sipgate like you can do on the Linksys PAP2 ???

If the router you are using isn't locked to a particular provider then registering with https://www.voxalot.com allows you to have as many different accounts as you want all linked to one telephone.

Here is a website that does a daily comparison of all the Betamax/Finerea VOIP providers:

    http://www.backsla.sh/betamax

Personally I use voipdiscount.com - they have the best rates (mostly free) for the destinations I call.
  • thanks to all who tried to help.

Have tried port forwarding, didnt work.
Even Tried putting netgear TA612V in DMZ of belkin router and disabling firewall.
    Nothing seems to work.

Guess for the time being i will stick with rebooting the netgear everytime i make a call!

    Hi

I've not read the full thread - but have read the comment about needing to reboot the TA612V after each call. I had one connected to Sipgate and had the same issue, I tried everything - re-flashing the unit, rebooting it, re-installing it, even differing BB providers, Netgear and the retailer who sold the unit were unable to help. Ended up sending it back for a refund - now use PAP2's without any issue. Sounds like you have the same issue !

Not a solution - but aleast you know you're not the only one !!

Have been reading the thread with interest since I bought my Netgear TA612V.

Interesting to read about your problems medic1978. I havent unlocked my TA612V as yet but will be doing so soon. Currently on sipgate and my problem seems to be that my phone will randomly rign for 2 seconds 4-5 times a day when no one is actually calling me ..rings for no reason. Have contacted sipgate who said try a new rj11 to bt socket adaptor but have not got around to this as yet.

On another note My free 2 months on sipgate are about to run out, I really find the incoming number function handy but with the end of the minutes I am looking for another VoIP provider that gives free UK calls AND an incoming number. Does anyone know of one or who the best one is???

I have compared the costs and sipgate for outgoing calls is quite expensive, same with skype who also charge for an incoming number ...ouch!!
The cheapest I have found for an incoming number and cheap calls so far seems to be Orbtalk 1p/min to landlines at all times but mobiles are quite expensive.
The cheapest I have found for UK calls and mobile is Viopcheap.com - free outgoing 01/02 calls for 90 days and mobiles 5.4p/min - but no longer give you an incoming number

If you're quick and in the same position the skype offer of 6months free UK calls is still available until 31/12 if you top up with 10 quid, which I will probably be taking up in the interim period since I have a Teleworst cable phone

And does anyone use Voxalot - can I divert the incoming sipgate/orbtalk number it in any way to a Viopcheap using this service.....I was looking around the site but was a bit puzzled.

Anyone else in the same position ?? does anyone know a VoiP provider that gives free UK calls AND an incoming number????????

I use a PAP2 which has two telephone ports. One line is used for incoming, the other for outgoing. The incoming uses a free sipgate number. The outgoing uses Voipdiscount - though after my 90 days of free calls are over, I will switch to lowratevoip.com

Sign up at Voxalot. Input your sipgate details, then input any other provider you wish to use too. Set whichever provider for outgoing calls. Reconfigure your router to voxalot details. Now you can have all incoming calls go through sipgate, and on the same telephone make outgoing calls from any other provider (or providers - eg dial * before a call and you go through voipdiscoint, dial 9 before a call and go through someone else, etc etc. or have 0845 calls routed to one provider, 01/02 through another etc - That way you can use whichever provider has the cheapest call costs for each individual call rather than relying on the "average" cheapest).

Has Voxalot dumped their forced voicemail yet?

I did try Voxalot but hated it due to having incoming calls forced to go to their voicemail system and no way of turning it off.

I hate voicemail, and my callers hate (often) being charged to find I don't quite get to the phone in time.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
