selling your stuff on Amazon - part 7 - advice for newbies in the first post

If you look at end of the second post there is a chart that will help you, it's not exactly what you want but it's a guide0
-
I have just been looking at that but it doesn't really help.
I devised a formula myself years ago when I was selling loads on Amazon but when I sold everything I no longer needed it and have had a few computers since so it is long gone. Just realised that must have been 2003 or before as it was before they started charging VAT on fees as they used to be 75p and 15% iirc.
the main things I need to know are does the admin fee come off the postage credit? and do they take the 17.25% before or after taking the 86p and applying the postage credit?0 -
I think I will work it out, just need to do a few sums. after reading and re-reading amazons help pages i've realised 17.25% is from the sales price so postage credit must be applied after0
-
for anyone interested I think this is correct formula for selling books =SUM(M5/100*82.75)+1.4
M5 is my grid reference for where i entered the selling price so amend as appropriate
£1.40 comes from £2.75 (postage credit) minus 49p (admin fee) minus 86p (selling fee)
if you are pro-merchant replace £1.40 with £2.26 as you don't have to pay the 86p selling fee0 -

Here is an example:
Book Price 13.00
Postal Credit 2.75
Total Paid by Buyer 15.75
Amazon Commission 15% of Book Price -1.95
VAT 15% on Amazon Commission -0.29
Amazon standard fee on postage allowance -0.49
Amazon Non Pro Merchant Fee -0.86
Total Deductions made by Amazon -3.59
Paid to Seller 12.16
If you PM me with your email address I'll send you an excel spreadsheet which is a calculator. All you do is enter the book price and it does the rest.0 -

Thanks for that, and pm sent. Have been trying to make my own spreadsheet again but yours will probably be better.0 -
Hi Guys, I would just like to say thankyou for putting all this useful information about selling on Amazon on money saving expert. Having read all the info I bought some cheap books today and listed them tonight. I sold one in 1 hour 15 mins and made my money back on the books I bought with the one sale. Great. Want to buy some more now!
Can anyone tell me if ex-Library books are ok to sell and also if it is ok to send second class rather than first?
Many thanks

Well done on your sale, yes ok to sell ex-library books but make it really clear in the listings ie something like - 'ex-libary book with usual stamps and stickers' add things to the description like plastic covers or whatever your books have - my ex-library books often have a torn flyleaf where the label has been ripped off so I mention things like that and some seem to have sets of initials written on the back pages so check them carefully. Charity shop books can be expensive where I live but ex-library ones are 10p or 30p each and I've made good sales with a few of them.
Re postage - there's been another debate on this a few pages back - maybe search the thread if you are interested. I send the next working day but generally 2nd class unless its been an expensive sale and do 2nd class if its heavy or bulky as well. I get good feedback on speed of delivery so it doesn't seem to be a problem sending second class. Some posters send 1st class same or next day and put that in their listings and reckon it attracts buyers. I work some days so can't offer same day but next working day seems to work and I put that in my listings.
Good luck Teapot0 -
Hope Mishka doesn't mind me posting this here, but I thought it was such a great idea - not that I've had any claims that I thought were dodgy!
From the Amazon Discussion Boards (by Mishka)
One thing I always now do is include a 'hope your happy' slip, on this i put an email address which i created purely just for this purpose. I know that if the buyer emails me on it and trys the 'havent received item' trick I can confidently reply that I know they have.
Its only happened once to me via ebay but its at least a bit of a measure to try and prevent it-some people are really that daft they dont consider where they got the contact detail from,

I couldnt remember their name and i didnt want to mention MSE on another board in case they all came over here :rotfl: some of them seem really mean !!!
