Hi all
just attempted a frugalisation of a friends choccie biccie recipe:
315g SR flour, 30g cocoa powder, 200ml oil, 125g sugar. Mix oil and sugar, sieve in flour and cocoa, work into a runny batter and make dessertspoon splats on a tray. 170 for 5 mins then 150 for further 10-15. (in fan oven only ever 10).
Will report after tasting once cooled. Raw mix was nice

thought I would post on here about an experiment I am going to do, a vegetarian lasagna
I have made twice now a beef mince one from Silver Spoon, which is the Italian equivalent of Mrs Beeton. It is an absolutely delicious recipe and costs about 60p a portion.
Both the meat mix and the bechamel are simmered (separately) for half an hour and that seems to make a big difference to the flavour
1kg of frozen peppers are £1.44, so if I used half a pk, that would be the same price as the 300g mince if you use SP mince. The idea would be to make a peperonata using the peppers and the passata and onion already in the recipe.
the bechamel uses 50g butter and 500ml milk, I use UHT skimmed. The sauce seems to contribute quite a bit to the flavour, so not sure whether to try frugalising to oil and 50/50 milk/water. Think I might try making a little sauce and see what it tastes like
will let you know how it turns out
PS I even made some pasta for the meat ones, prob not cheaper than SP tho!0 -
A friend gave me a link to this site and I noticed the Nigella Humous with peanut butter recipe and though it might be an interesting addition to humous, I still have lots frozen but will give it a whirl next time I make it (using CFR Humous recipe obv!!)

I've got 4 salmon fillets in the freezer (bought by OH even though neither of us like salmon!) any idea what I can do with them without them tasting too salmony?
Weezl I'd have it with rice, no reason behind it just my preference.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -
Apricot if you combined it with flaked white fish say 50:50 in a mildly cheesy/bechamel sauce and topped with herby mash, as a fish pie it would be less salmony? Some lemon in the sauce would also balance the flavours

Sounds good Weezl - will give me the chance to use the haddock from the freezer too! Will have to buy some potatoes tomorrow and give it a whirl - never made a fish pie before!
Am going to try this next week, not sure what the costings would be but I have a glut of green beans at the moment.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -
