Technically it shouldn't matter if you've swapped the display case for the actual item, as legally you've paid for it and it's your property, even if they haven't given it to you yet. But it puts you in a stronger position if you get the actual item in your hand before mentioning you think you've been charged too much.

The danger with mentioning your overcharge before you've swapped the display case is that some stores have been known to pretend they're out of stock (i.e. lie through their teeth) as another novel approach to wriggling out of R+Rs.

So where do I go to collect the goods? Customer services? Or does the cashier ring a bell on the till and someone come and bring it over?
I find R&Ring nerve-racking enough without wondering how to get my hands on the stuff in the first place!

    Thanks for the help.
  • Just spoke to Dundee and they said that it didn't apply to out of date SELs, if there had been no date on the 2nd (yellow) label then they would have R&Red.

Incidentally is there are definitive way around this ? A foolproof way to get around awkward CS staff who say that out of date SELS do not apply ?

There isn't a definitive way, but my best suggestion is to keep calling Dundee until you get hold of someone with experience, integrity and competence (there are a few of them left) who agrees with you that out of date SELs do qualify for R+Rs. The argument is that it's not the customer's job to check that every single SEL in the store is in date before they put the item in their trolley, and since the date appears in tiny lettering, many customers can't read it anyway.

Ok so I need some advice.

I used to work for Tesco about 8 years ago, and some of the oldies in that store know me by sight.

To date I have had 3 small R+R's (Beck Vier, Lindt Chocs and Paint by numbers)

The last 2 times I have been asked for my name and address (I cant give ou a false one as they sort of know me) Is this right?

Today was getting my R+R on the Paint set, and another CS woman came over whispered to the other "did you take her details?" and muttered something else.

What shall I do? I dont want a letter telling me I cant shop there anymore, but equally I have hardly accumulated any size of refunmds for them to be wary of me?

    Go to another store?
I spelt my username wrongly on purpose, by the way!

Well my nearest larger store is about 30 miles away.....not exactly worth it IMO unless an expensive product came up...but then all the stores in my area are really hot on misprices, and most of them are checked, and repriced before I get a chance.

Dundee have been saying this more and more in recent days, as if it's fast becoming the official line.

Would be interesting if someone could get them to admit in writing that it's now the customer's responsibility to check the date on the SEL for every single item they put in their trolley, and Tesco accept no responsibility for overcharging as a result of a customer's failure the check the date on the SEL!

Come on Kelly and Logan - what's it to be?

This out of date SEL excuse is, frankly, pathetic and tells me that the R&R policy (which I am more and more convinced they HAVE to do, btw, but I recently asked our 2 normally very helpful Tesco employees on here to confirm or deny my belief and not a sausage was heard on it) is clearly becoming a bit of a thorn in Tesco's side.

To take their argument to the ultimate extreme, why have dates on SELs at all? If they can clearly (according to Dundee) not be relied on to gauge the price of the product you wish to buy, why not just leave them up all the time? Maybe have some SELs from the 1970s displayed as well?

    Exactly!

Have they actually considered the implications of what they're saying?

They can display any incorrect price as long as it has an expired date underneath it in tiny lettering, and then charge whatever they want at the till... and they're not doing anything wrong??!!!

surely they are breaking some rules on the disability act. the dates on sels are by far too small for the visually impaired and even for me. shouldn't they have to be at a certain size font?
