You are correct, there was a big hoo-ha in the press earlier last week about it.

When buying a create of booze through the self service some of the creates are cardboard and some are plastic. Instead of scanning the barcode on the create you twist one of the middle cans and scan a can.. scanner thinks its a pack of 4..not 24 so you get it at the lower price. How i found out was i saw an out of date sel for fosters and ive had plenty of fosters so i mentioned it to a bloke who was in there by the booze and said to him what to do. He said "i dont like fosters i like cider.." then mentioned his trick.. he stunk of booze and what did he have in his hand.. create of cider.
I know its not an ranr just thought i'd share it.. good little trick but only for the strong hearted...and i'm not one of them!
Anyone heard of that before?? I guess you would have to add a few more items as on the selfscanners dont the staff have to clear the system to say you are over 18??
I would be tempted to take this Gents story with a pinch of salt. Self service tills are fairly clever, and should pick something like this up. When you scan an item you have to place it in the carrier bag (express tills) or down the belt (normal tills). At this point it weighs the goods, and the till knows the weight it should be looking for. If the weight doesn't match then the till will throw up an error and not continue until its sorted.
This coupled with what you said about age verification makes me think this would be very hard to pull off.0 -

Actually, something similar happened to me at Morrisons a couple of months ago. I picked up a crate of own brand gnats urine for my pop and the SA scanned it as £1.70 (the price for 4, not 24!). This may surprise some of you on here  but I told her about the wrong scanning and she said it's when the barcode scanner catches the barcode on one of the individual cans. Took me a while to get my head round this but it's entirely probable; supermarkets don't sell cans singularly so the smallest amount of cans they sell is a 4 pack, hence if you scan just one of the cans the till assumes it's a 4 pack? Am I close?I spelt my username wrongly on purpose, by the way!0 -

That's what a Tesco sales assistant told me yesterday. When I was getting an R&R on a four pack multibuy, to save me getting all of the cans out of my backpack, she said she only needed one can, as it would scan as four.

Yes thats it, if it catches an individual can instead of the barcode on the pack, it scans as a 4 pack.
Very honourable of you to tell the cashier
Still hard (and illegal I imagine) to pull off on a self service till.0 -
Heinz 4 pack of soup sign said 2 for £3 but on the SEL it said 2 for £1.50 8 packs for free0

No Dude, that's theft.

Hope you have fun in your cell with Bubba!

My washing powder was clearance £1.18 scanned at £4.57+= refund.
Yes you are right0
