    Since through traffic isn't involved in any vote or consultation this is the closest users of that road can get to democracy... legitimate protest.

    Others just do it because they're in a hurry.

    Not in our street as its a dead end. But I can see you could be right. I don't think they actually achieve anything. Unless you count irritation and damage to your vehicle. We have a road nearby which has narrowing which seems to work much better.

    Well you avoid the damage by slowing down, unless you are refering to the slightly increased wear from acceleration and braking?

    Narrowing can work, but can also increase accidents by bringing traffic at each other head on. This is particularly true if cycle bypass lanes aren't installed.

    If your road is a dead end, why does it need humps at all? Usually they are for roads that are used as a cut through to avoid a congested area or busy junction, installed by lazy councillors who want to be seen to be doing something without spending time effort and money on the actual problem.

    I have never had damaged caused. But I did used to do work for a courier firm and they went through springs like they were going out of fashion. The narrowing in the streets here is an old area were the streets are one way one then opposite direction the next.
    Our street is a dead end but is long. So some didn't see the signs hammered down the road turned and hammered back. They still do even with the humps.
