1 Standard car, what's a safe speed?
2 Standard car with no air bags or seat belts, what's a safe speed?
I would drive to work naked if you don't admit you would drive at least a tiny bit slower for the second possibility.
Pedestrians don't have air bags.0 -

That's the most itelligent comment you've made so far. :j0 -

Put a video camera in your car, so you can film other motorists, put it on Youtube, and take an arrogant, high and mighty stance against them.

What's a safe speed?
Now, you're in your car, it's made of china and has a spike in the middle of the steering wheel.
What's a safe speed?
And the road is made of gravy and my tires are made from roast potatoes, my hands are just empty rubber gloves and my head is full of weasels - whats a safe speed now eh?
I could kill someone driving at 10mph if they were unlucky enough. Speed is not necessarily the main factor in fatalities, theres a whole host of variables in play.
Take MotoGP for an example, bikers can merrily fall off at 150mph and walk away with a bit of road rash as the racetracks take this into account and are designed to accomodate such an event. I have a friend who came off his bike at 20mph and broke both legs as he hit the kerb awkwardly, his speed was hardly the issue here and it isn't the deciding factor in many accidents.
Just drive at the speed limit and be aware of your surroundings - nothing else you can do.
EDIT - and seriously, all the 'WHAT IF A CHILD....' brigade should think it through before trotting out that line, yet again.0 -

Nice example. I dont suppose the biker wearing protective racing leathers, crash helmet and being on a race track with very little around him, had anything to do with him being able to walk away from a 150mph crash.
Say he hit's someone on the track, or trackside (marshall or other rider for example) at 150mph - how do you think they will come out of it?0 -

I could kill someone driving at 10mph if they were unlucky enough...
And your argument is what exactly?
That 10 mph is no more risky than 30 mph? Only an antisocial oaf could think that.
Here's some simple science for you (help mummy, the nasty man is using maths as well as logic ):
Car: 1500 Kg
Speed: 10 mph = 4.4 metres/second
30 mph = 13.2 m/s
Energy carried by car: 1/2*mass*velocity squared (school kids know this, I hope you do)
car at 10 mph: 1/2*1500*4.4^2 = 14520 Joules of energy
car at 30 mph: 1/2*1500*13.2^2 = 130680 Joules of energy
That's 9 times as much energy for 3 times the speed.
If you hit a car, kid, cat, whatever, you will inflict 9 times the energy even though you were *only* doing 3 times the original speed.
And it's the same for the 20 mph verses 40 mph argument. 2 times the speed equals 4 times the impact damage.
People with brains have thought all this through, so you don't have to :rotfl:.
OK, now that's settled, I'm going to have a nice cup of tea and wait for all the pro 'I can speed, I'm a great driver' to apologise.
