Of course, its the logical next step isn't it?0 -
If you are law abiding, never been in trouble, and are proud of your honesty, to have a visit from the police can be very traumatic and intimidating.
Having called the police, Morrisons should have had a full investigation as to what went wrong, and kept the O.P informed at all stages.
Unfortunately Morrisons are famous for treating their staff like dirt, so why should they treat their customers any differently.
At the very least the O.P should take their custom elsewhere. If everyone did this, then perhaps Supermarket Customer Service would improve.
Spot on.
The reaction from the usual suspects to the OP is not only hostile but totally misplaced. If I was Morrisons I would want to know what went wrong and led to Morrisons (a supermarket I shop at and like) falsely accusing a loyal customer of theft. I would also want to ensure the chances of this sort of thing never happened again.
If I had been impugned like the OP I would want a written apology. I would not be bothered about compensation. I had an incident in Sainsbury's where a Deputy Manager was stroppy with me over a mispriced product I was buying as a gift. It was swiped through the till and came through at a higher price than it was on display at. I complained verbally and was told that I should have known the price was wrong (for a product I had never bought !!!). I wrote to the Manager and complained and had a very nice letter back apologising. No flowers, no vouchers, no compo, just a courteous reply which was very satisfying and reinforced my previously good impression of the store. I continue to shop there to this day.

You honestly believe that it would get to court purely on the lack of a receipt? I thought you were far more sensible than that Marleyboy.
Mmmmmmm, can you give one good reason why they didn't do that check before they made a false allegation and wasted police time??? And for someone who thinks its all about nothing, you sure are spending some of yours on it
Police time is very valuable, while they were visiting with the OP they were not available for another call, complete waste of time. Morrisons should be at least warned to check CCTV and get their facts right next time. After all the OP was traced through the registration number, time was not exactly of the essence was it?0 -
It wasn't a mistake, it was a genuine suspicion of a drive off so they reported it to the police. Yes it will happen again, as it should.
Next time get the driver to go in and pay, or emphasize the payment is on behalf of another customer.
But it was a mistake. There were no grounds for the suspicion. If any checks had been made they would have seen their error on CCTV.
My husband always fills the car with petrol, while I go inside and wait to pay. If the queue is long I join it and he's finished before it's my turn;) You always have to say which pump you're paying for, they don't recognise which one a payer has come from, so what does it matter who pays?? In over 3 years of doing it this way, we have never been accused of a drive off.0 -
but as a taxpayer I want to know why the police didn't make Morrisons pay for wasting public money.
The police are the ones who investigate a crime and eliminate sudpects. If Morrisons have to pay them, would it make the Police impartial in their work?
As for wasting public money, it is not yours, it is at the discretion of the Police how they deal with offences and resources.
As for paying for the Police, when an event requires the use of Police, the event has to arrange with the Local Police authority to arrange adequate cover. They also have to pay for this. Such events are Football, Rugby, Cricket and concerts etc.0 -

The OP wasn't accused of theft.
Morrisons must have reported the OP as a drive off (theft) The police then suspected the OP of theft and visited. Morrisons had it totally and utterly wrong. Why is it some cannot see that? It only needed them to check before they accused and it would not have happened. As far as I can tell, the OP wants a written apology saying how the mistake happened, and hopefully saying that steps have been taken to minimise the risk of it happening in the future.0
