ESA - Spending Review

I've been watching and downloaded the Spending Review, the below comment stood out for me since I'm on ESA and in the Work Related Group.

"Time limited contributory ESA for those in the Work Related Activity Group for one year, to improve work incentive..."

Are others reading it that you can only be on it for 12 months and what would happen than? JSA...!!! !!:(

  • He has announced 450,000 out of work from the civil service, 17,000 from the armed forces, 20,000 from the MoD. With all these looking for work how are disabled people who can only work limited hours and have maybe been out of work for decades find work in a year in a recession?

Yes you would go from ESA to JSA just a shuffling of the deck chairs on the titanic.

I wonder if you could re-apply after the 12 months for ESA again or ask to be re-assets to see if you can claim ESA under the Support Group.

ESA and JSA will become one benefit as they announced that there will be one universal credit - as it has on BBC website:
Perhaps the biggest move on welfare is the introduction of "universal benefit" - replacing the current system of Jobseekers Allowance, income support and employment support allowance with a single benefit to try and simplify the system.
What happens if you don't find work within a year is anyone's guess!

The shape of things to come, I can just imagine the chaos, makes you wonder where all these jobs are going to come from.
I currently get IB, although my hubby is on a pension, if the worst came to the worst and I had to go on JSA would they take his income into account, we always paid our own taxes and stamp, although I understand that I get credited with something towards a stamp on IB, I don't really know what that means
Don't know what job I could do as I can't stand or sit for very long
  • I am on IB and DLA (lower rate both components).

From what I understand I will, at some time in the future, be transferred onto the new 'universal' benefit.

After one year I will be expected to be fit enough to work?!....I have ASD! I am not likely to ever recover. My DLA award is indefinite because they accept my condition will not improve! (Actually it was indefinite...they don't make indefinite awards anymore do they - not sure what my review will say when it happens)

When my ASD refuses to disappear, will I be penalised? Will it be deemed as my own fault that I failed to have a miraculous cure?

It's not something that is going to happen overnight. He did say that he has put money in place to work it out over the next 2 terms of government so that it is done right and make sure there are no mistakes!

It was said that those in receipt of DLA will be exempt.

Thank you for this....I listened to the review, but didn't pick up on this.

I may have heard it wrong then, but there was something in the benefit reform about doing it over 2 terms, but without reading the whole thing again (which I'm too tired at the moment!) I can' say what it was.

I apologise if I gave the wrong information.
