FYI this is what i sent GD:

    ....
Can you please explain why this is so? The cheapest pair you now have under the buy one get one free offer is £60, what happened to the abundance of £49 pairs?!

    ....

I'm really sorry you feel that way. We're currently showing 137 frames at £49 & £59. 41 of those frames are at £49. All of these will be buy one get one free.

Yes, i was advised by the email response that "We were doing some site maintenance before the promotion went live, and some of the lower value frames disappeared for a short while. They are back up on the site now."

The more relevant issue is the fact that GD has blatantly changed their prices in anticipation for the Groupon voucher, when it isnt even advertised on the GD site.

This is the first time i have used Groupon and i am
    massively disappointed about this.

As I said in a previous post we didn't change our prices due to Groupon at all - and I'm sorry you've got the impression that there was an intention to deceive as it really is not the case.

We have a category on the site called 'crazy deals of the day' which change regularly throughout the week. Products are reduced and go into that category, then are swapped for other products, always with a very significant discount. I really do apologise that the precise product you were after was one that was swapped out, but another product should've been swapped in which others may have preferred. And on monday next week another set of products will be in there meaning you can get a pair that would otherwise be out of reach.

Again, I'm really sorry you've been left with this impression, it wasn't intentional at all. I'll try and get in touch via the moderators and see if we can sort something out around that original product you saw and liked.

    So i emailed Groupon

    Hi Joykin,

I am unable to locate the email that you have sent to our customer service team. Did you send it to support@groupon.co.uk?

However please note that, as stated in the Fine Print, our vouchers are not valid with other offers. The price hike you are referring to is actually the original price of the frames without the special offer price that was displayed prior to our deal. We still believe that our offering is more advantageous than alternate special offers that Glasses Direct had been running prior to their Groupon feature. I hope this helps!

This is certainly not the case. As can be seen from a lot of posts, a good number of people were attracted by one particular frame which was on offer at £49. The price of this frame reverted to £99 before the Groupon vouchers were despatched. The Groupon saving represents approximately a £30 reduction plus free postage whereas the offer that attracted a lot of attention was a saving of £50.

I'd like to believe this was all honest and above board but i'm afraid i believe there was a lot of smoke and mirrors involved here to attract business for both Groupon and Glasses Direct.

I for one will be a lot more wary of this kind of offer in future and i'd imagine a lot of others will too.

I'm a little disappointed that a site such as MSE decided to carry the offer given the fact that exactly this situation has arisen before, whether it involved these companies or not.

Personally, i appreciate that the mexx ones were a crazy deal of the day, that's fair enough and it's nice that glasses direct offered a couple more pairs at that price today. I can see that they have lots of £49 glasses available on the site but I only liked the mexx ones and a pair of gd ones which have now gone up in price. When I purchased the groupon voucher I thought 'what are the odds of not being able to get either of those on Friday?'- lol. I couldn't get the mexx ones this morning as I kept getting error messages. There are a couple of styles I like on the selectspecs website that Martin also highlighted so I'll be getting a refund from groupin and paying £19 for 2 pairs of glasses that are in stock there are the same price they were a few days ago.

Noticed i had sent it to the .com address instead apologies for that. Sent it to the .co.uk now.
  • I managed to order a couple of £49 pairs (including a Mexx pair) without any problems at approx 12.30.

The website kept crashing but it went through in the end.

I'm very happy with the deal!!

  • Well its taken me 4 hours to put my order through:o

Site kept crashing and had a couple of fatal errors - was going to give up but kept going off to do jobs round the house as the pages were re loading -so at least I kept busy.

I too liked the Mexx Specs but decided to try a couple of others similar to ones I already have using the download of the specs giving dimensions so they should be OK- am playing safe or so I thought

So I choose the Black Prague and the silver Jacqueline ones - was quiet pleased until DD3 on her way out ,glanced over at my order and piped up "You'll look like Olive of "on the buses" and an ol' granny in the other ones"

    Great I can't wait:o

Actually its a good deal if you stick with the site - look forward to receiving them -fingers crossed they look ok:)
