but I haven't had my eyes tested recently enough and do not know my current prescription. So is there an alternative to going to an optician before the Groupon deal ends? Also when I have my prescription how do I inform Groupon about it?

The deal is for a money off voucher from Groupon to use on a purchase from Glasses Direct - Groupon doesn't need to know your prescription and Glasses Direct won't need to know your prescription until you're ready to order a pair of glasses from them. It doesn't say when the actual voucher expires, but its probably valid for at least a couple of months, so you'll have time to pop down to the opticians and have your eyes tested. And the voucher is valid on their 2 for 1 deal which is good news!

    Hope this helps.:)

I just had a eye test and now need two pairs of glasses as I am short sighted. I just paid for two pairs of specs at reduced price. I hate having to wear glasses no offence to others its just down to me

I hate them too, especially when you come in from the cold and they get all steamed up, or the way they rub behind the ears, that's why i wear contact lenses most days, but i like to carry a pair of specs with me just in case - my contacts have been known to fall out at the most inopportune moments! :rotfl:

I dont get mine until Saturday one for reading and one for driving. One of them comes with anti glare on it for £30 extra
  • I got a couple of pairs of specs during the last promo. Glasses Direct sent two of the same pair rather than one of each of the ones that I had ordered but were very responsive when I mentioned it to them. In the end I opted to keep them as I liked them so much. If I needed more pairs I would not hesitate to get them from GD.

So how much do you think it would be appropriate for an optician to charge for fitting and adjusting glasses supplied by someone else? £5?, £10?, £20?

I presume the tip you gave: "Order the glasses and then go in to a high street optician for a final fitting and adjustment" assumes that people can rely on the goodwill of the optician not to charge for this service. Hmmm.

Whoever wrote this should try buying a suit from a catalogue and then going in to a tailor to have it adjusted for free - or how about getting a tyre from an online tyre outlet and asking your local tyre depot to fit it for free. You know as well as I do that if you tried that, you'd be told where to go - in no uncertain terms.

Don't forget that Opticians provide a service you won't get with online suppliers.
They are skilled in the measurements needed to adjust glasses and the techniques needed to adjust frames properly. They also have the right tools to do the job. A bit like tailors and tyrefitters really. Need I say more?

They also have the skill to advise you on the technical aspects of frames, lenses and the balance between the two - so those slim, elegant frames you like won't look like you've cut the bottoms off a couple of old milk bottles...

Oh, and just because an old frame fits comfortably, it doesn't actually mean that a new frame will. It's a bit more complicated than that (which is why Dispensing Opticians train for 3 years).

So, Perhaps you should suggest that a payment for this service would be appropriate - and I don't mean 50p in the charity box, (which is all a lot of opticians would ask for). Perhaps you should view things in the context that Opticians only get paid £20 for a comprehensive eye examinatiom. What other professional would charge such a reasonable fee after four years' training? Or perhaps Opticians should simply refuse to fit and adjust glasses which were not bought from them. Seems reasonable to me.

And while I'm about it, I think it's irresponsible of you not to mention that it is actually illegal to provide glasses for children and visually-impaired persons otherwise than as a qualified optician. I''m sure the suppliers point this out. So should you.

Finally, I'm not an optician, nor am I connected with the optical industry.

I just have a sense of perspective.

Rick you have a valid point. I spent 40+ minutes on Monday with eye test then another 20 minutes picking some glasses and measuring for fitting
  • You can get this deal for about £2 less by going via a cashback site for an extra 12% off: ;)

By the way it says "Voucher valid for 1 month only" so don't forget to use it or lose it!

Hi Welshmike – this is Ellie from Groupon! :j
The deal is for money off the glasses so you would need to be aware of your prescription first. If you have not had an eye test in a while, don’t worry! The voucher is valid for 1 month, so you have plenty of time! When you make your order you will be asked to enter your prescription online.
Please visit the Glasses Direct’s FAQ page for further information.
    I hope this helps!

Hi welshmike, I'll be watching this forum, so feel free to ask any questions.
To follow up on what Ellie said, you'll need a prescription that is less than 2 years old to be able to buy glasses on our site.
If you had a test less than 2 years ago you can ask your optician for a copy of the prescription, they are legally obliged to give you a copy on request.
When you order your glasses, there is a form on the website and you simply enter the details from your prescription on the form. If you have any problems or questions about your prescription you can call our UK call centre whilst you're entering and they can help out.
