The method I use to unblock drains is the one my grandmother taught me. Put one cup of soda crystals down the plug hole, followed by one cup of white/distilled vinegar. This foams up. Leave for at least an hour and then pour a kettle of boiling water down. Works nearly every time, and is worth doing now and then to stop the greasy build up.

Hi Lizzy. Vinegar is acid and soda crystals are alkaline hence the reaction. In theory, their pH's will be cancelling each other out, but I admit, the reaction does seem to have effect. I think it's worth occassionally JUST using soda crystals and hot water as the alkalinity helps remove the grease. Someone with a better understanding of chemistry may come along though...
  • I've been cleaning out my kitchen cupboards (one per day) and I did my cleaning cupboard under the sink yesterday. I found loads of cleaning stuff, dish clothes, sponges and a box of soda crystals which i must of bought at so stage for something but I cant remember. Anyway back to the question what can I use soda crystals for?
I'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!
    JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD
  • If your sink is blocked or just a bit slow, tip a load of soda crystals in and pour hot water down. It will clear.
  • Tip half a packet into the drum on your washing machine, or base of the dishwasher, run them empty on the hottest cycle going. It will dissolve all the soap scum, and you'll have really clean and sweet smelling machines! :)

they're great for softening the water in your washing machine (if you live in a hard water area) and mixed with hot water they're also good as a cleaner, for cutting through grease :)
