How long is it taking to hear back now? Think it's been about 3 weeks since i sent my letter?
  • After reading 24 pages starting with the oldest first I have yet to come across any reference to shop workers (non food)
I work in a shoe shop and my occupation is not listed.
Am I covered and how will I determine what to claim.
    Thanks

All you can do is try. It will only cost a stamp and they can only say yes or no. Worth a go.

Can this be done with anything else if you work from home - utility bills, for example?

Yes it can, in principle. Directgov are helpful, but your best bet is to ask an organisation that knows about your work: eg: the National Childminders' Association know all about childminders' tax claims!

I have to say though, that I have been a bit disconcerted by this thread about laundry as anyone who has potentially hazardous clothes to launder (eg: risk of infection or contamination) shouldn't be laundering at home.
  • OMG thanks to this website, I wrote a letter to the inland revenue to cover the last 6 years. As I've had several different jobs it turns out I am owed just under £2300 in overpaid tax and uniform allowances for the last 6 years!!!!!! I'm speechless ::j:T thank you money saving expert!!!:money:
  • I have just recieved a cheque for £59 and had my tax code changed to allow me £60 extra earnings per year. ...I only work part time and have been there less than 3 years.......I simply telephoned

    0845 3000 627

And the very helpful lady at the tax offices did the rest.
The cheque came within a week.

Thanks , as ever, to MSE
  • I'm self empoyed and wear uniform. Does this apply to me? Thanks
  • Hi my work colleagues and i all sent off our letters around 3 weeks ago and have all received our letters back over the weekend everyone has had a refund of some sort and a tax change bar me, i got a letter back saying,

" i can advise you that there is no local agreement held between your employer and the inland revenue regarding you claim for laundry expenses."

    " No repayment due "

Does anyone have any idea what this is all about?

your help would be gratefully appreciated

Some employers have a locally agreed allowance that is different to the nationally agreed allowances listed here on this thread.

Usually the locally agreed allowances are more then the national ones so it's preferable to claim these. HMR&C staff don't always check this so unless you ask them to check their employer notes you can end up with a smaller allowance. If there are no locally agreed allowances they should just apply the nationally agree ones, which they don't appear to have done here. On the whole it's typical of the inconsistent practice you get dealing with HMR&C.

I'd recommend you to just send another letter as the next person who deals with it will probably do it correctly.
