I would say he's vehicles - all other workers.
Please note that the fixed rate expenses are not only for laundry of workwear, they are for replacement tools as well and that if the cost of your replacement tools is more than the allowance, then you can claim the difference (so keep receipts).
So...if OH has had to pay for all his own tools and tool chest to keep them safe...would he be able to claim for anything? We have receipts and statements from Snap On and the other tool providers to prove he's spent over £6k on specialist tools for his job.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0 -
@lightisfading - you can go back up to 6 yrs for any claim.
@tangledmemories - yes he can claim for replacement tools£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
My wife has just got back £45 allowance - which equates to £9.90 rebate (22% of £45). Out of interest who decided the amount of £45?
My wife works for a dogs and cats home charity - does she fall under any of the fixed rate categories?
Also, can my wife make a claim for clothing needed for working outside - eg waterproof, warm clothing and footwear?
Also need to go back to them as they have only done it for one tax year, where we requested all previous tax years.0 -
The expense allowances are agreed nationally between the unions and HMRC.
I would think, for the sake of simplicity, I would put your wife under 'farming' - they are both outdoor, working with animals-type categories. The £45 is desined for the maintenance of clothning - if she can shaow that she has spent more than £45 in any year on replacement of these items, then she can claim.
When she writes to make her claim for preevious years, make sure she askes for a payable order, not a code change.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -

Thanks
So do you think she might come under 'Agriculture' on the list here

That industry has an agreed flat rate expenses, so does that mean my wife could claim more than the just the £45? (ie £100)
should we just write to HMRC and ask if she does fall under that industry?
We have already asked for the and received the £45, will this matter?0 -
There is nothing to stop her trying! She could explain about all the protective gear she needs to buy and the necessity of laundering these items regulalry because of spread of infection, etc.
There is never any harm in trying anything!£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
Well I called the tax office yesterday - Centre 1 becuase I wear a uniform. Apparently my job title wasnt on the list, and as my job is really 3 seperate jobs merged into one ive had to put it all in a letter and send it into centre one and someone will make a decision.
I hope I get it.
If I do I will be telling all the people I work with who also wear uniforms (119 other people). And I might even start spreading the word as I work for a council and there are loads of people who have uniforms to wear but have to wash them ourselves, bin men, road sweeps, school cleaners, joiners, plumbers, security people etc etcWhen dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.0 -
apparently where I work someone tried to claim the allowance but because the financial controller told the tax office he didn't want the company to take part no-one is allowed to claim.
Is this correct, can this happen?
I heard this second hand and not too sure about it's reliability.Karma - the consequences of ones acts."It's OK to falter otherwise how will you know what success feels like?"1 debt v 100 days £20000 -
This is rubbish quite frankly. If an employee wants to claim an expense, this is between the employee and the tax office, it has nothing to do with the employer.
Maybe the employer said he didnt want to be involved in negotiations regarding an agreed fixed rate allownce for the employees. There is nothing to stop each employee negotiating their own allowance.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -
