NHS staff can claim tax relief on quite a few things:
There is the flat rate allowance as discussed above.
Nurses can claim for shoes and tights.
They can claim for professional subs such as RCN/RCM.
They can claim a proportion of Unison membership fees.
They can claim to buy trade publications such as Nursing Standard
They can claim for N&MC subs.
As some NHS mileage rates are below AMAP rates they can also claim mileage relief.

If you visit this site you can get an estimate of the amount: https://www.healthcareworkertaxrebate.co.uk/calculator/default.aspx

Thanks for this. However because I work as a 'support worker/health care assistant/auxuillary' or whatever people call me these days but all relate to the same job, they wont let me claim. They say that as it only says 'nurse' on the 'system' that I am exempt and even though I read out to him what it says on the IR website that 'nurse' is a generic word which covers other nursey type jobs, he was having none of it as he cannot actually access web based pages and wouldnt let me tell him the code to the page that MUST be on their system somewhere.

Should I just write in anyway or shall I ring again and tell them I am a nurse as according to their website, that is what I come under?

    First lady I spoke too was lovely, the second....Gary...was a n o b!

I think someone else would give a different response.

Even it they did't allow the full flat rate allowance for a nurse you should still be able to claim under the standard £60/£45 rates.

The following would also still apply:
They can claim for professional subs such as RCN/RCM.
They can claim a proportion of Unison membership fees.
They can claim to buy trade publications such as Nursing Standard
They can claim for N&MC subs.

  • Ok, so ive worked for the same company for 10 years now doing the same job of Warehouseman/Delivery driver.
Now ive changed my job but im still with this company, the uniform i wear doesnt have a logo but my previous one did.
My question is can i still claim backdated cash?

Yes, if its special protective clothing which you wouldnt wear outside of work, it doesnt have to have a logo. The logo rule only applies to things like polo shirts which are normal everyday wear. Protective footwear also counts.
But you can only go back 6 yrs.

if your job appears in the fixed rate expense deduction list on the HMRC website, then thats what you claim. If it does not, then its up to you to quantify your claim - the tax office cannot possibly know how much whatever it is you are claiming for is costing you.

  • My OH is a mechanic and MOT Tester and wears a uniform as well as overalls that I wash which is emblazoned with the company's name.
Which category would he fit into on the list? (just so I know which yearly allowance to quote)

    Thanks
;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)

I would say he's vehicles - all other workers.
Please note that the fixed rate expenses are not only for laundry of workwear, they are for replacement tools as well and that if the cost of your replacement tools is more than the allowance, then you can claim the difference (so keep receipts).
Please also note that the laundry allowance is not just for logo'd workwear, its for any kind of specialist work clothing. Therefore overalls would be allowable whether or not they had a logo as one wouldn't normally wander about in them. Similarly if you were a waiter and had to provide black trousers and white shirt, their laundry would not be allowable as this is everyday wear - but if the items had a logo or other distinctive something on them, then laundry would be allowable.

Silly question and sorry if it's been answered already but can you claim for jobs you're no longer in?

I've done 2.5 years in retail 2004-2007 - logo'd smart shirt (own trousers)
and very slightly (5 days or something :P) under a year 2007-2008 as a bank cashier - full uniform provided including trousers (no logo), blouse (logo), suit jacket (logo'd).

Can i claim for either? Every penny counts at the moment :o
