Elantan, I reckon he comes under 'trades ancilliary to engineering - labourers' which is £80. He just needs to write to the tax office saying what his job is and claiming the fixed rate allowance. The allowance is also to cover things like work boots. If HMRC mention the cleaning vouchers, he just needs to tell them what you have told us.
Irishgirl - it doesnt matter how many hours you work, you still incur that expense.

is this for self employed or employed people ? hubby gets his work to give him boots

This is for employees. Its not exclusively for work boots - its also laundry of work clothes, protective gloves and things like that. If he does that job, he is entitled to the deduction.

Hi ,does anyone have a template for this please?
Im not good at wording things :/
Also can you ask for a cheque for backdated payments or does it just come off your tax?
Does anyone know how far you can backdate it ?

I have been washing hubbies uniforms (with work name logo) for 4 years !!
Hes a HGV truck driver (food industry )and gets filthy but being in the food industry he is always expected to be pristine.

You can claim back a maximum of 6 yrs, assuming you were doing that particular job for all that time.
You just need to write something like:
    Dear Sir
I wish to claim the fixed rate expense deduction for a [whatever your job is - the food industry in your case] of £xx for the current year and £xx for the years blah to blah.
Would you please amend my current code number in respect of this year's allowance and send me a payabe order for previous years overpayments.
    Luv skittish.

Dave, you just tell the tax office that you are required to wear logo'd workwear - thats the speciality of it - you wouldnt wear it down the disco, would you?
no! I wouldn't, thanks I know what to reply now.
  • Hi, Ive just come across this thread.

I was just wondering if someone could tell me if my OH might be able to claim this back.
He is a pipe work engineer, has been in the same company since 1984, but has only been provided with overalls within the last year. The thing is the overalls do not have a logo on them. They are plain overalls that he has to wear, and i have to wash

Is he entitled to claim anything for this year?

It doesn't have to have a logo. Copy and paste the draft letter and send it off ASAP and make sure you update the allowance. Even if you’re turned down it’ll only cost the price of a stamp so no harm trying.

Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get it!

Please see my previous post - the allowance is not only for washing clothes - for this type of trade it would also be for work boots. Look at the fixed rate deduction list to see if his trade is there. (Although in 1984 HMRC was coding people properly and giving fixed rate expense allowances as a matter of course.)
