These claims should really be considered on a case by case basis but due to the small size of the claim, probably no more than a maximum of £75, HMRC won't put this kind of detail into the case unless they think it is going to set a precident that has significantly wider implications.

If you were to post a borderline case on here you could make a case for or against it. In reality 99.9% of these claims will just be passed. If your claim is not approved you will get a letter telling you why, you can also answer that letter if you disagree. Nobody is going to get prosecuted for tax evasion of anything for making these claims.

We can talk about talk guidance all day but I don't think there is a lot of point unless it is to back up a specific case. I think throwing in reasons why claims could be rejected is only going to result in people not getting the tax refunds they should get. May aswell just make a claim and see what happens because in pratice either you'll get it or you won't. Most people will get it.

Am I correct, do Healthcare Assistances receive £60? I applied for the tax allowance a couple of years ago but haven’t applied this year; it was about £40 the last time I applied.

I'd like to know this for sure as a co-worker of mine was asking about this.

The full table of reliefs is here:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm

If they don't fit into any of these descriptions the rates general uniform wearers are £60 for 08/09 onwards an £45 before then.

Thanks! Thought I'd double check as he'd probably need to know this when writing out the letter for claiming this.

    Thanks again!

Does he visit patients as he may be able to get tax relief for his travelling as well?

Sorry, I made a mistake when I posted my query. He's actually a chef and not a healthcare assistance.
