And now for something completely different.........the bad news. I submitted my application by hand on the 5th of April last year in order not to lose a years allowance. I received a reply roundabout October. I understand that due to the cutbacks in staffing levels, they are a little bit pushed nowadays.
I would suggest that you compare the experience with that of buying Premium Bonds, just forget about it and sooner or later your number is bound to turn up. Holding your breath however is not recommended. ;)

    Good news everyone!

For anyone claiming this allowance, the rate is now a (whopping) £60, from 06/04/2008!

you will not actually be saving £60 a year as this is just the tax free allowance. you will be saving the amount of tax you would be paying on that £60. So if you are taxed at 22% you will actually be saving only £13.20 a year

My husbands coding notice came through for the new tax year and it still said £45, maybe we should give them a call

To claim the allowance just use the template on page 1 and send to the address below

    Inland Revenue
    Coventry 3
    Sherborne House
    1 Manor House Drive
    Coventry
    CV1 2TA

Don't expect a quick reply as they were about three months behind when i last contacted them. However once registered it's done automaticaly every year!!

One more question. One of the ladies at our branch called the tax office about this. She was told a write a letter as you all have said. But they told her to put in the letter how much it costs us to wash our uniforms each week. Anyone else been asked to add that to the letter? What would you reckon I should put as the cost? We are given 2 uniforms and I work 5 days a week so wash every other night.

Unless you wash your uniform at a launderette, how are you supposed to know how much it costs ? Are you supposed to count the units that it takes to boil the kettle/heat water in washing machine and multiply this by the unit cost ? If so, don't forget to add the price of the washing powder as well. Sorry if the technology is incorrect but I'm a bloke only moderately domesticated and just emerging from the middle ages.
I wasn't asked how much it costs, only if my clothing had company logos on. I took some photos with my webcam and printed them and sent them with an emphatic "YES, PLEASE SEE ATTACHED CONFIRMATION"
I would be tempted to find out how much it costs to wash a single item at a launderette and use that figure to calculate a weekly bill. I would suggest that they are not likely to request receipts.
They must be trying to raise funds in order to pay for the compensation in the 10p tax debacle. :D
