Do the tax people contact the company you work for? I might be able to persuade my dad to apply but if he thinks the company will find out he probably wont do it as he is the proudest man in the world ever, beyond reason.

Yes, HMRC may well contact the company to find out if it supplies laundry facilities and/or if a uniform is necessary for your dad's work. The good news is that HMRC is bound by confidentiality rules, so they could not divulge the source of their enquiries.

I can tell you that HMRC will most definitely and in all cases contact the employer to verify all the details.
  • Not Tried This Myself Yet But My Partner Just Receive An E-mail Stating He Can Claim For His Laundry Bill, £ 140 Per Year For The Past Six Years. He Has To Write A Letter Stating His National Insurance Num, Which Service He Is In, Home Address And Work Address To:
    Hm Revenues & Customs
    South Wales Area Service
    Ty Glas
    Llanishan
    Cardiff
    Cf14 5ya

Hope This Helps Some People And Sorry If It Dosnt Work. He Is Sending His Letter Off Tomorrow. Will Let You Know The Outcome.

I got a cheque from IR this morning for £204.01 just for writing the letter, took about a month to come through. This was £151.98 for 6 years laundry allowance and some medical benefit that I did not claim (never even knew about?).

So it's worth the price of a stamp to find out.
    Thank's MSE :)

have read through all the posts on this thread but still a little confused!

Currently work for a company who I've been with for 2 and a half years - have all the details so going to claim tax back from here.

Prior to this I worked for another company (Saturdays only) can I claim for this??

Do I just send two letters one to each companies tax office?

    thanks

Nurses should recieve a flat rate expense (FRE) for uniform anyway. The revenue can sometimes be funny on if your company allows this type of relief but percivere as washing clothes work give you to work in is a general expense.
    Barclays - Reclaiming - £3380 - stayed 30/08/07 - £2261 goodwill 20/02/09
    Abbey - Reclaiming £250 - 1st letter - stayed
    MBNA - Reclaiming £400 - received £294
    Morgan Stanley - Reclaiming £138 - received £120
    MINT - reclaiming £110 - received £90
    A&L - £170 charges - £170 back!

The standard rate for this allowance is currently £45/year, but specific industries have managed to argue in favour of an increased rate to reflect the increased costs involved for employees in those industries.

    The full list is here

    Extracted from the list...
Uniformed police officers (ranks up to and including Chief Inspector) 55
Uniformed fire fighters and fire officers 60

No mention of MOD personnel but this might just mean they're only entitled to the basic 45/year (providing the 'no washing facilities' criteria is met).

hi i need to ask a question im an electrician working for my local authority and not sure if i would qualify for the 45 pound a year rate or if i am the 85 pound rate. also if i pay money to the union each week and have money going into a credit union straight from my wage slip would i be entitled to anything from that?
    thanks.

  • Dear all,:j

I'd like to ask you, if anyone of you is BA Employee & claimed money back
from their tax office. I've been working for BA as a ground staff since last april & certainly would love to get allowance for dry-cleaning of our uniform.

I'd really appreciate your comment & you are very welcome to send me an e-mail. Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you. :T
