As people have asked about fire officers I need not to ask again, but please do reply if you know that MOD, Police and fire offers are allow to have this tax allowance for wasking kit. Dont let them down.
The standard rate for this allowance is currently £45/year, but specific industries have managed to argue in favour of an increased rate to reflect the increased costs involved for employees in those industries.
The full list is here
Extracted from the list...
Uniformed police officers (ranks up to and including Chief Inspector) 55
Uniformed fire fighters and fire officers 60
No mention of MOD personnel but this might just mean they're only entitled to the basic 45/year (providing the 'no washing facilities' criteria is met).Quidco savings: £499.49 tracked, £494.35 paid.0 -
hiya
Claimed a few months ago for hubby, yet the table mentioned above states the amount to be £55 not £45 as he's been awarded. Is this an oversite on the tax office? Hes also just recieved his new tax code for the year with the £45 on. Any advice?
Thanks

Yes and yes! Call HMRC and point out the mistake.Hi I worked for a company for 5 years but left 2 years ago. Could I get back pay,,,? where i work now there is no uniform.
Yes, send a written claim to your current HMRC office (ask your current employer for the address) as soon as possible. You can claim back to 2000/01 if you get your claim to HMRC by next Wednesday, if you miss this you can only claim back to 2001/02.Quidco savings: £499.49 tracked, £494.35 paid.0 -
MyNameIsKen wrote:I have been working at Tesco for two years and I always wash my uniform (which bears the Tesco logo) at home. Is there a good chance I will be able to claim any money from the tax office?
What is the process for making a claim? Who should I write to? What should I say?
Many thanks.

I work for Tesco as well and the address you need to send your letter to is as follows:-
Inland Revenue
Saughton House
Broomhouse Drive
Edinburgh
EH11 4XG
(Tax reference code 847/T1)
This is the correct address to send to for Tescos employees. I'm not sure what it'd be for other employees.--

My husband is a soldier and asked the tax office to change his code and this is the reply he got back-
"No tax relief is due for expenses incurred in laundering Amry uniforms, as the Army has advised H M Revenue and Customs that laundry facilities are made available to emplyees."
Now anyone that is a soldier or is married to one will know that there aren't any free facilities to wash the uniform and I think my husband is going to show the letter to his CO and see what he says and ring the tax office up.0 -
I would also be interested to know if self-employed people can claim for this. My partner is a ceramic tiler and I have to wash his clothes every day on a boil wash-often twice, just to get the grout out!
Also, does anyone know if he can claim back for the fact he uses his own car to get to work, or not because he is SE?
I registered as self-employed last year because I was mystery shopping and the tax office ran a nice little 1/2 day course. I would suggest it might be worth trying to get on one as it answers all these questoins.
As it was explained to us, someone working as a self-employed maid couldn't claim mileage from home to 1st client or last client to home but could in between.
A builder on a building site couldn't claim from home to building site as it was always the same place of work.
A mobile hairdresser could because each day/week was different so she didn't have a usual place of work.
As for uniform, anything that could be worn out of work (however hideous) couldn't be claimed. So if you have to wear black trousers and a yellow shirt and black jumper or a builder who wears jeans - tough but if you wear logo'd overalls or obviously branded clothes then you could.
As a self-employed person, you can't claim for meals out but you can claim if you take a client out.
In your situation, it might be worth investing in some overalls and getting a company logo on them - that way, I you provide protection for the clothes underneath but I think you can claim for washing the overalls.
The tax office also run a course to help with filling in your tax return.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -

My DH works for the MOD fire service and claims his allowance for washing his clothes despite the fact that his actual fire 'gold' kit is laundered by the MOD the rest of his uniform is not. The tax officer did make it difficult and he had to get his sub officer to write a letter stating that he was responsible for laundering the next to the skin items not the MOD. He gets an allowance of £60 per year. So despite the fact that there is a laundry facility on the RAF base he still gets his allowance.0 -
Do the tax people contact the company you work for? I might be able to persuade my dad to apply but if he thinks the company will find out he probably wont do it as he is the proudest man in the world ever, beyond reason.0
