I've sent the letter about 10 weeks ago and only last week I received a letter stating that they will contact my employer. How long does it usually take to receive a decision?
  • Hi, with regard to the tax code and uniform allowance i have a code of 522L and i work for Royal Mail/Post Office but my wife also has the same tax code but can wear her own clothes, should my code be different and is it worth me writing and finding out? 6 x £45 would be nice!

    Regards

    Dave

The code 522L shows that you have only the normal tax-free allowance for the year and no other allowances have been applied. (Except in the unlikely event that they were both claiming underpaid tax from a previous year which exactly matched another allowance for this!)

So, if you are laundering your uniform and the PO/Royal Mail do not offer laundry facilities, then you can put in a claim.

  • if you are a nurse you can clame a little more than £45

  • I recently received a tax code alteration and refund of all my £45s from the previous 5 years.

Thanks to you guys on this site for bringing this to my attention

  • hi

any reason why the letter, where you fill in the balnks to claim tax for laundering uniforms is £45 a year? My husband works at Royal Mail and recieves £90 a year..........

The amounts are agreed following talks with relevant unions (and other industry representatives). More often than not the allowance is just a laundry allowance, and currently that is £45 worth of extra tax-free allowances, but in some cases it can be higher. This link lists the nationally agreed rates but there are some that are agreed locally also.

  • Just received notification that the claim which I made by a personnal visit on 05/04/07 has been successful. As an added bonus I've received £4-58 in interest, that's over 6 months laundry !
  • I have to wear a logoed polo shirt or logoed rugby shirt to work, plus we have logoed fleeces. I wrote to my tax office using the template here and my claim was not accepted.

The letter coming back was rather long but states that they need more info, such as photos of my uniform.
In bold it says "The essential test is whether the employee would readily be recognised as wearing a uniform by a member of the public in the street."
    I'm o.k with this.

However, elsewhere it says elsewhere the uniform has to "identify its wearer as having a particular occupation".
This is probably where I fall short. Everyone at my company wears the same logoed shirts, whether they are managers or office juniors, so the shirt doesn't indentify the occucpation as such, it identifies the company.

What do you think? Shall I send off the photos of my uniform or am I flogging a dead horse with this?
    Cheers,

*edit - just noticed this line "Fixing a permanent and conspicuous badge or logo to what would otherwise be ordinary clothing is not enough to make it a uniform". So there we have it, logoed polo shirts, fleeces etc. would 'otherwise be ordinary clothing' so I guess that rules them out.
