Just seems strange as you don't get a personal allowance for each job.
you are conflating a personal related allowance with an employment related allowance.

as here, one person gets the one personal allowance but can have more than one employments for which the uniform allowance is claimable on each (assuming different employers/uniforms of course)

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere before, but too many pages to trudge through so hoping someone can help...

I work for a telecomm's company, usually in an office, but occasionally (maybe 5/6 times a year) I do site visits to locations we provide internet too. I've checked this link http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim32712.htm to see what amount I should mention in my letter, but cant seem to find an applicable one.
can anyone advise what amount I should be claiming for?
    thanks.

yes annoyingly the first person to post on this thread is still around but will not update their first post

the default rate where no other specific amount is mentioned is £60
    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32485.htm
please understand you get the tax relief on £60 so a basic rate taxpayer 20% = £12

but then the allowance doesnt discriminate on any costs.
laundering an office based work shirt vs laundering greasy overalls.

Although there are different allowances for different types of jobs so something must decide it.
  • When writing the letter do you just claim the 20% or do you put the amount that is on the HMRC list?

taxpayer: ring, ring, hello is that HMRC, I claim my 20%!!!

    HMRC: 20% of what

    taxpayer: my laundry costs

    HMRC: what is your industry/job

    taxpayer: I do xxxxxx

HMRC: then look up the rate for the job and claim that rate, remembering that if the job is not on the list the default rate is £60 http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32485.htm

taxpayer: great I have been in that job for 6 years so I claim £360, please send cheque asap

HMRC: no, you can only go back 4 years (ie to back to 5 April 2009 in tax year 09/10)

taxpayer: but your website says from 2008/09

HMRC: we have better things to do than update our website. The rule is a rolling 4 years that now makes it April 09 http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/about/deadlines-taxpayers.htm

    taxpayer: OK send me £240

HMRC: no you get back the tax on £240 at whatever is your highest tax rate, eg: a 20% taxpayer will get back £48 total covering their 4 years claim. This may be sent by cheque which you will have to wait an indeterminate amount of time to receive because we like to mess people around when we owe then cash, especially at this time of year! It also helps us to mould you into a better citizen who exhibits patience. We will however adjust your tax code so that you will automatically receive the allowance each year forever more until you tell us to stop (or we find out you're a fiddler). You will get a new tax code notification in the post at some point when we can be bothered to send it

taxpayer: oh, hangs up and cancels expensive holiday to be paid from tax refund and substitutes with a daytrip to the seaside

HMRC: turns off playback on the answer machine they were using and congratulates self for not having said a word whilst responding to the questions
  • Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help as my husband has sent his letter for this rebate to the tax office 4 weeks ago now and we were wondering on average how long it has taken others?
We have requested a cheque and the a tax adjustment for following years. I am presuming through previous posts that he should receive a cheque for £60, going by date restrictions now. He has worked for the same retail warehouse for 7 years and wears a logo bearing fleece, t shirt and polo shirt. Any help would be greatly appreciated?:money:

a large number of the approx 1900 replies on this thread recount individual people's experiences with having to wait. No one can give you an "average" time because everyone has had different results (if you choose to believe them of course, frankly on some of them I don't)

at this time of year given HMRC will be snowed under with tax returns being filed for 31 Jan I doubt your refund will get special attention

yes in theory he should get £60 for 09/10 - 13/14 although strictly speaking HMRC do not issue refunds until the end of the tax year so by claiming 13/14 early this may explain why there is a delay on yours

00ec25 Thank you for replying to my post, I obviously wasn't asking for a specific time range...just a general average...
and we did ask for a cheque for previous years and the tax adjustment for this year onwards so don't really see why that would hold things up..
anyway, we will just wait and hopefully things will work out in the end..:o

    update

Heard back from HMRC yesterday, so roughly 4/5 weeks since letter was sent, they have readjusted my husband's tax code for previous uniform tax rebate owed and for this year onwards so it works out as the £60 we expected. We did ask for a cheque but they went with tax code change instead. Hope this helps other people who are still waiting.
