I did this a couple of months ago.

It doesn't have to be a uniform with a specified company logo etc on it. You can claim for clothes that you specifically just wear for work, logo or no logo. I did this for a previous job where I wore a pair of jeans and an old top but I didn't wear it elsewhere due to health and safety reasons etc. For my current job, I have an easily recognisable uniform.

I got £220 odd back, all for sending a letter. Well worth doing. Would highly recommend.

My claim for ordinary clothes (suit) and name badge was declined. How did you get away with it for jeans and a t-shirt?

I tried as at the start of this thread it states:-
"You wear a recognisable uniform that shows you've got a certain job, like a branded T-shirt or police uniform. Also, we've heard reports that even plain clothes, without a logo, that you only wear for work may count - it's worth a try."
  • Just got 4 yrs x £60 off my tax allowance, so around £50 real terms. Thanks MSE! :j why don't employers who employ people and make them wear their uniform publicise this tax allowance? Surely it is a sort of fringe benefit for working for them and wearing their uniform... oh well, got mine!

It was 6 but it is now just the last 4 years:

If there was was a trade that deserved help with washing overalls it is the waste disposal industry - to prevent contamination being taken into their homes.

because the way the UK tax system works your personal financial affairs are none of your employers business so your emplopyer has no business telling you what you can and can't claim

that said, i'd agree that the majority (not all) of the sort of people in jobs requiring uniforms are the sort who would benefit from someone else telling them what to do and what to claim

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=56175809&postcount=1559 - the text I used in the letter, post #1559 on page 78, dated 28-09-2012
I got a tax recalculation letter 9/10/12 and recently cashed a cheque for £12.05 - both letters (see below) were issued by the HMRC - HM Inspector of Taxes - PAYE - Liverpool
I hope this helps anyone (:
Please also read the guides as 00ec25 has suggested!

    Text from the recalculation letter:
    Dear *
I have now made the necessary amendments to the Tax Calculation previously issued for the year shown above.
My revised calculation is shown on the enclosed sheet.
You did not receive a repayment following your period of unemployment.
The reason for the overpayment flat rate expenses claim made.

    Text from letter with cheque:
    Dear Sir/Madam,
I am pleased to tell you that you are due a repayment of income tax for the year shown above.
A cheque for the sum of £12.05 is attached below.
My calculation of this amount has been sent to you seperately.
  • My 'job' isn't shown
I referee football and pay tax on all earnings as self employed, and my 'uniform' is bought by me, has to be worn whilst refereeing and is washed by me
Over the years i have just been claiming £1.00 per wash, but it would appear i have ben underclaiming for several years.
Has anyone an idea on what amount i should claim, and backdate to 2008 for this occupation. It would of course exclude the amount already claimed for previous years
Having spoken to a tax employee when i first started this and was told whilst they cant tell us what we can claim for in detail ,they will advise what we cant. So bearing that in mind, would an amount of £90.00 pa be a reasnable amount?
  • Protective clothing ? ;)
  • I have 2 jobs, have worked at both for 11 years. I know I cannot claim for that long but do I include both in one letter or do I have to write seperate letters for each job?
I'd appreciate any help on this question, thanks xx
