They have started to receive replies stating that their tax codes have already been adjusted to take the cleaning into account, but we can claim tax relief on contributions to our death grants via union subscriptions.
If any Royal Mail worker would like a copy of this standard letter,PM me.
...same adjustment has been written into Police officers' codes, so it looks like it's probably common in the 'public'/services sector.0 -
A couple of people have asked whether this would still apply to them if their companies DO have laundry facilities, but not for them personally. Going purely on common sense and logic (which is sometimes a fatal flaw in a plan) ;-) I would say yes. The tax relief is there if you are obliged to wash a uniform, but your company does not provide you with the means to do it and therefore you have to wash it at home - at your own expense.Whitegoodshelp0

My husband is a firefighter at an RAF base, there is a cleaning facility available on the camp but his next to skin items are not cleaned at this just the fire kit. He gets an allowance of £60 per year added after letter to tax office but also had to get letter by section commandor to confirm this. Its more complicated to apply but if you work on a base you can get an extra allowance added - the £60 is the agreed rate for firefighters.
I work as a mobile carer and get £70 per year added, I just had to send a letter off.0 -

You need to ring your tax office, they'll ask you questions then inform you wether or not your tax code allowed for that. My OH tax code is alright and has it already included I have to ring them tomorrow as mine code is differant from her's.
Just hae details ready like, national insurance number, tax code address etc.
Hope you can get some money back!!!"I AM THE GATEKEEPER OF MY OWN DESTINY" Nacho Libre

Ooh thanks for that. That's certainly worth bearing in mind as Mr Littlies is a joiner also. Think I'll have to speak with him about that.

Check your old payslips your tax code should be on there, if you have any P60's that should give you details too, you should have these if you've worked 5 years out of the last 6 as you get them a month after the prevoius tax year. Failing that just contact your council they may direct you to the nearest Tax office who should ask you for your national insurance number and address am sure they can take it from there."I AM THE GATEKEEPER OF MY OWN DESTINY" Nacho Libre
