After discovering that the amount you get back is only worth about £10 per year my other half has decided to have his stuff laundered at the hospital where he works. He works 37.5 hours per week and will have five pairs of trousers and five tunics, times that by all the weeks he is at work and I think it would cost us a lot more than £10 per year in electricity, washing powder etc. And, I have longer to put my feet up as I won't have to iron them either. :)

anyone know what happens if your employer has no cleaning/laundry facilities, but offers you dry cleaning vouchers?
the vouchers are for one item only-my blazer. All other items (shirts/trousers/jackets) are not eligible for the vouchers and therefore have to be washed at home.

Does anyone know if you can claim tax back if you have to buy things to wear with your uniform? I have to wear a certain type of shoe and have to wear a tights. I don't get any help buying these items from my company but have to wear them. Could I claim tax back for these?

I use to get tax allownace when I worked for PO many years ago. My wife works at Sainsburys Deli, before it was Safeway for almost 10 years she aint had a penny allowance, so I mentioned this to her, its worth a try.

I have worked for Sainsburys for 7 years and have always received an extra allowance, which presently is £45. It says quote " The inland revenue has agreed with the union that £45 is the amount you are likely to have to pay out for doing this job. You do not have to be a member of the union to get this" I never applied for it and im not in a union, so i would check that out.

I remember, many, many years ago, tradesmen and women got tool sharpening allowance, boot and overalls allowance etc etc. Those entitled should apply to their Tax Office. The tool allowance should include replaceing worn out or broken tools.

My husband works in a nursery. They have washing facilities for childrens clothes but not for staff - would he still be eligible? He also changed jobs last year - would he be able to claim for the three years he was at his previous workplace and would we need to send 2 letters or combine it into one?

Very interesting topic - I manage a nursery and staff are responsible for laudering their own uniforms so I will be advising them to have a go, thanks all
