Hi can someone point me to which part of the act it says that as my OH got money deducted out of his wages when starting his new job for steel toe-capped boots. He does work as a temp for an agency but his actual workplace requires them to be worn....

Safety shoes do not have to be paid for by the employer by law..many employers choose to do so but they do not have a legal obligation to do so. Most employers that recognise that safety shoes are a necessity of the job will pay towards the shoes..usually a set amount of say £30.00. If a style of shoe is chosen over that amount then the extra is paid by the employee.

Thanks Sarahlouise, I didn't think that was the case!!! I looked through those regulations and it isn't mentioned at all. Just wanted to see if I was going mad or not! LOL!

I am a Police Officer, would I be entitled to this allowance as I wash my own uniform and can assure you that I do not wear it outside work hours!

Ahhhhh.......but has your uniform got a logo ???? :rotfl:

You should have a flat rate expense of at least 55 per year for cleaning your uniform .. in addition if you subscribe to the Police Federation you can claim tax relief on the payments

  • Thanks for this post, have just had letter from tax office adjusting my code. :j

Only thing is they say that only £40 has been agreed with the union so that is all they have allowed me[x 6 years worth btw]................is that about right??

Should I query the allowance or is it different for different circumstances? I work in a Bank, and they supply a full uniform, but you can claim dry cleaning vouchers [for about £2.10 worth]

Also, has everyone had their adjustment through their tax code or did any of you get a nice fat cheque?

Have also told all my workmates and everyone else who might benefit, so big big thanks again to OP

I had an adjustment through my tax code (but they were also adjusting my full tax rate to a lot less anyway as I was a student until recently and havent earned my full allowance yet - so I had a nice tax rebate in my pay last week, which was nice)

  • Hi there,
Thanks to this thread, I have done the letter to send and will be claiming the extra allowance myself.

I am a bus driver , get the full uniform, wash it at home etc.

    My question is:
I cant find any other allowances that I might qualify for on this site, are there any and can you supply a link to them.

    How about shoes, medicals etc.

    Any help appreciated

Does anyone know if nurses can claim for support tights? Mum's uniform is washed at work, so can't claim for that. However, one of the nurses claims that she claims for her tights ?!

    Thanks in advance,

My missus is a nurse and claims for washing uniform at home, RCN fees, Registration etc. She got a form from the RCN so if your mum is a member she could enquire with them. Nurses uniforms these days seem to all be moving to trousers due to lifting and handling H&S regs, so tights wouldn't be a visible part of her uniform and I would personally doubt it is claimable.
