You can only claim as far back as 6 years any way.

Must get hubby to pull his finger out to get this sorted out.

Just received today from tax office a new tax code for the wife who works at Sainburys on Deli. She got her tax code increased by £45 per annum, I assume as I got in touch with tax office some weeks back about washing work clothes.

Aslo the tax has taken into account 6 years of work.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you

Just got a letter today with a change of tax code for my OH. It says that the refund for the last 5 years will be made through wages - is this likely to be in one big lump or spread throughout the year - does anyone know? Anyway it came within 2 weeks. Thanks OP I hadn't heard of this before.

I wrote to the tax office for Sainsbury's, which is in Southampton about 2 weeks ago. They eventually sent me the same letter twice saying I was already receiving it - then a PAYE coding notice was sent to an old address (fortunately my Mum still lives there).

My tax code has changed from 493L to 494T.

So many thanks to the OP.

I would also be interested to know if self-employed people can claim for this. My partner is a ceramic tiler and I have to wash his clothes every day on a boil wash-often twice, just to get the grout out!

Also, does anyone know if he can claim back for the fact he uses his own car to get to work, or not because he is SE?
The journey to and from work is regular commuting ie private mileage, so it is not a business expense.

Does this also apply to people who wear a Suit to work? I have to get mine regularly dry cleaned and do end up spending a fair bit of money every month?
No. A suit can be worn elsewhere and is not technically a uniform.
