I have just had a reply from the IR. they say they didi not have an agreement in respect to Flat Rate Expences for Laundry Expences. According to the webssite only a few companies do this anyway (nhs etc) so really they are trying to fob me off and I'm having none of it.
Now have written letter no 2 quoting their website :P

Hi!
Did you send the inland revenue a copy of the letter i posted on here ?
The letter was written by my local tax office.
I and a few others haven't had any problems when using the letter.
They can't really argue with a letter produced by one of their own colleagues!!
Good luck !!
Below is the letter written by my local tax office:
All you need to do is fill in the blanks and send it to your work's tax office.

Your Address

RE: Expenses Allowance
I have been employed at Company Name, Location since (Date of Starting at Employment). I am obliged to launder the uniform, which is supplied to me by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £45 for each year since the above date.

Wait a minute if you work in industry or a hospital, surely washing your unifrom at home, means you are taking your contaimination home with you and possibly passing it on to your family...
During some Asbestos training, we were told of a family where the guy was working with asbestos and his wife contacted asbestosis because she was washing the overalls and breathing in the fibres from the overalls whilst she was doing this.
I would have thought that all nurses unifroms etc had to be laundered n site to stop the spread of any infections ???

Someone asked about the military but no one replied. Does anyone know yet whether this applied to army uniform in the regular forces (ie. NOT the TA)?
My bloke has been in for 13 years always paying for his own washing cos they have to pay for their laundrette facilities! So I'm guessing he could claim back a lot of money! Do you think he'd have to do this through the army or just write to the relevent tax office?

8pnoodles, I think from previous posts, any claim he tried for would be limited to 6 years back. The £45 mentioned is the extra allowance he could get if entitled. So the tax he would have paid on that would be about £9.90 per year. If his claim was successful, he could expect about £9.90 x 6 at the most back.
My DH had to launder his own works provided uniform at home for about 20years until changing jobs about 2 years ago. I'm not sure now whether I claimed the allowance for him or not, but might write the letter anyway and see if he can get nearly £40 back for the 4 previous years.
thanks to the op

DH has worked for 3 different companies in last 6 years where each one has required a uniform which I have had to wash. Can I claim the relief for these 3 companies, or just his current job? We should get relief for washing uniforms especially those that are flippin' difficult to wash or iron!!!
Thanks for any advice!0 -
You can make one claim for every year for the past six years.
So for example if your DH has worked at the lastest company for two years. You will be able to send a letter claiming the last two years from that tax office. Then if your DH worked at the other company for one year you will be able to send a letter to that tax office claiming that years tax.
Then you could send letters to the tax offices of the other companies for the three other years. All information about the tax offices can be found on the p60's.My Motto in Life:

Hi can someone point me to which part of the act it says that as my OH got money deducted out of his wages when starting his new job for steel toe-capped boots. He does work as a temp for an agency but his actual workplace requires them to be worn....0
